Strictly A River Crossing: The Jane’s Walk!

My Medium Publication, Strictly A River Crossing, is now a Jane’s Walk tour in the 2016 Calgary Festival!

What are Jane’s Walks? In the words of the festivals worldwide organization:

Jane’s Walk is a movement of free, citizen-led walking tours inspired by Jane Jacobs. The walks get people to tell stories about their communities, explore their communities, and connect with neighbours.

This is my second year leading a Jane’s Walk. Last year, I lead a tour named Marda Loop Exposure, based on work I had done for United Way’s Urban Exposure Project.

The 2016 Global Festival is May 6th, 7th & 8th!

This year I am leading two walks based on this publication, both in and around Calgary’s East Village. I will be doing a shorter condensed version on the Saturday and for those interested in the more complete story (and what questions are still outstanding), a long-form version on Sunday.

Steel truss bridges were once a staple across the western halves of Canada and the United States. Prefabricated, they could be quickly assembled, and were a staple of booming towns in the late 19th and early 20th century. During Calgary’s first boom, from 1905–1912, a number of these bridges were built, mostly in East Calgary.

Five are still standing in Calgary, one in Bowness, and the other four in the East Village and Inglewood. This tour focuses on the four steel bridges still standing in historic East Calgary.
