Piyush Pandey: The Adman Lives On
A couple of weeks back on a slow sunday morning, I stumbled upon something small. Ordinary. Almost invisible.
A local sweet shop in Mumbai had pasted a newspaper page on its counter — probably to shield the glass from dust or oil. I wasn’t paying attention… until I noticed the headline. It was an obituary to Piyush Pandey demise.
And somehow, the setting made it even more powerful.
In the middle of a bustling shop, between packets of chips, glass bottles of Sprite, and the aroma of fresh chaat, lay the news of a man who shaped Indian advertising for decades. A man whose work had always belonged exactly here — among real people, real voices, real life.

Seeing the news in that environment — taped casually on a counter — felt symbolic. No agencies, no awards, no glass buildings. Just everyday India.
The India he understood better than anyone else.
His work lived here. It reached families eating chaat on plastic stools, children buying 5-rupee biscuits, students grabbing a cola on their way to class. His genius was that he made advertising feel like a conversation with a neighbour, not a pitch from a brand.
And today, there it was again — his final headline, living in the very world he spent his life speaking to
Piyush Pandey’s journey — from writing his first Sunlight detergent advert in 1982 to becoming the Executive Chairman India and later Global Chief Creative Officer at Ogilvy — spanned over four decades. He shaped campaigns that didn’t just sell products but told stories in the languages, emotions, and cultural rhythms of the nation.
He brought to life iconic work — from Fevicol’s unforgettable “todo nahi jodo!” “Fevicol ka jod hain” “The sofa Ad” Cadbury Dairy Milk — “Kuch Khaas Hai” Asian Paints — “Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai” “Do Boond Zindagi Ke” Polio Awareness Campaign Hutch (Vodafone) — “You and I” with Cheeka the Pug From Cadbury’s emotionally resonant messaging to iconic fevocol ads. His ads felt like conversations with everyday India. Under his leadership, Ogilvy India became a creative powerhouse and Indian advertising found its own voice rather than mirroring the West.
The Magic of His Simplicity
Piyush Pandey proved something profound:
You don’t need complexity to create impact. You need honesty.
He taught an entire generation of creators that the most powerful ideas are the ones rooted in human behaviour, not marketing decks. That emotion will always travel farther than execution. That India doesn’t need to be impressed — it needs to be understood.
Even after becoming the Global Chief Creative Officer at Ogilvy, even after global awards and worldwide recognition, his soul remained unmistakably Indian.
And that is something I deeply relate to as someone who has always been drawn to human stories — from cinema to communication. In fact, that instinct is what shaped my own journey as a storyteller, which I wrote about here: **How I Became a Cinephile — A Journey That Began at Home**
It feels fitting that his memory appeared today in such a humble, real place — reminding us that great creativity isn’t just award trophies and Cannes stages (though he earned many), but the way ideas live within people’s daily lives.
Thank you, Piyush Pandey — for teaching all of us in this industry how to listen to people’s voice, and how to reflect it back through ideas that feel human first. Your legacy will continue to be a compass for creators everywhere.
