That was an unexpected treat — Yum!
The Caped Crusader’s pack are all at work or school, so we go in during weekdays to see to her needs.
On this occasion, I wasn’t heading for her house. Her needs had all been met. I was having some me-time, armed with a cup of tea and a biscuit, enjoying some late October sun. I spotted a huge low-flying skein of geese that were begging to be photographed. I put everything down and scrambled for my camera.
At that point, a yip sounded from within the Caped Crusader's house. She’s at an age where if she barks to be let out, it is vital to be quick, to avoid a carpet cleaning operation.
I raced to unlock the door, then spun around to try to catch the geese. Goodness me, can’t geese put on a turn of speed to get themselves out of range! But almost before annoyance could rise, I thought ‘Biscuit!’ and spun back again.
Too late!
My finger, on autopilot, clicked the button and caught the Caped Crusader clearing a few stray crumbs from her lips. And she’d spilt my tea.
As for the urgency with which she demanded to be let out, we strolled around for 10 minutes before she stopped for a bathroom break. That desperate yip had been entirely focussed on the unattended biscuit. I don’t know how she knew — there’s no window.
Age has affected her sight, her hearing, and she’s nowhere near as lithe and athletic as she once was, but her instinct for locating food is undimmed by age, and possibly psychic.
