Which is more painful, the electric chair, beheading, or hanging?

According to several studies, the most painful form of punishment is hanging . Asphyxiation is one of the most painful methods.

However, in some cases, hanging also involves dropping the convict into a pit below, breaking their neck immediately. Instead of a quicker death, the convict suffers even more agony as they struggle to breathe while holding their broken neck.

It’s important to remember that immediately after suffocation, the convict is still alive, just unconscious. It takes 2–3 minutes from strangulation to actual death.

In the case of beheading, the process is relatively quick.

The neck would be severed immediately after the blade was dropped. In less than 30 seconds, the brain would be completely dead and no sensation would be felt.

The brain still functions immediately after being decapitated. For example, in France in 1794, a woman named Charlotte Corday’s eyes could still search for her executioner even after being beheaded. Her facial expression even shifted from shock to vengeful rage just before she died.

The punishment considered the most humane is the electric chair. The electric shock usually immediately paralyzes the brain relatively less painful than the two punishments mentioned above.

The convict’s head will be given a wet sponge (soaked in salt water) to increase electrical conductivity.

The key is the sponge. If it dries out or isn’t attached properly, the convict will be electrocuted and burned alive at the same time. In this case, it’s clearly far more painful than hanging.
