Global Voices in Conversation: What Makes a Leader Worth Following? Inspired by Global Citizen Reflects on Claudia Sheinbaum President-Mexico

Sometimes a reader leaves a comment that becomes a conversation. After reading my article, “The Girl Who Became Mexico’s First Woman President — Brains, Courage & Claudia Sheinbaum,” Global Citizen shared a thoughtful reflection that moved beyond politics and toward the qualities she believes define meaningful leadership.

Global Citizen wrote: “She is not playing gender/race/identity politics in any way — she is just doing her work as a female leader, and allowing it to speak for itself… You get the sense she’s not in it for power or fame.”

*She also drew attention to something many people overlook:* President Sheinbaum’s choice to wear hand-made Indigenous and Afro-Indigenous designs, quietly honoring the diverse cultural heritage of Mexico.**

*Her final words stayed with me: *“What would our world be like — if we had just, kind, and good leaders like her in every country!”

That simple question reaches far beyond Mexico. It invites us all to reflect:

What qualities do we most value in leadership?

Is it strength? Humility? Service? Integrity? The ability to unite rather than divide?

History reminds us that no leader is perfect. Yet perhaps the leaders we remember most are those who understand that leadership is not about being above the people, but walking beside them.

Thank you, Global Citizen, for reminding us that sometimes the most meaningful conversations begin not with agreement, but with thoughtful reflection.

What I liked reading most — You don’t ask readers whether they support Claudia Sheinbaum politically. Instead, it asks a broader, timeless question:

“What makes a leader worth following?”

That invites participation from readers across countries and political viewpoints, which is very much in the spirit of Voices in Conversation.
