The sun hadn’t even finished stretching when the whole school filed into the courtyard for morning assembly. Everyone stood in neat rows — except the plastic blue chair on stage, which looked like it had eaten someone for breakfast.

Inside the chair sat Chuppandi, legs poking out like chopsticks from a takeout box. His spiky hair quivered, mismatched socks flapped, and his grin was the only part not trapped.

Principal Sharma froze mid-sentence. Microphone squeaked. A collective gasp of second-hand embarrassment swept the crowd.

Chuppandi wiggled. The chair squeaked louder. He paused, eyes sparkling. “Ladies and gentle-kids, behold the human origami!”

He flapped his arms like a penguin doing jumping jacks. The front row burst into giggles. Teachers tried to stay stern — failed. Even the school bell gave up and ding-dong-laughed.

Chuppandi rocked side-to-side. Crick-crack! The chair surrendered — POP! — sending him rolling across the stage like a runaway bowling pin. He landed in a perfect superhero pose, one sock on, one sock orbiting his ankle.

The courtyard exploded in cheers, claps, and one rogue trumpet sound from the band kid who forgot how lungs work.

Principal Sharma shook her head, lips twitching. “Mr. Chuppandi, you’ve turned our assembly into a circus.”

Chuppandi dusted off imaginary popcorn kernels.

“Oops! Did I make you smile again?”
