What Happened: State of the Union 2026

Tuesday night’s State of the Union ran nearly two hours, the longest on record, and it landed during an active partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security with federal workers missing paychecks and Global Entry suspended.

The President welcomed the gold-medal U.S. men’s hockey team into the chamber, drawing bipartisan “USA” chants and a sustained standing ovation, then announced that goaltender Connor Hellebuyck would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, an honor more commonly associated with lifetime contributions to public life than a single athletic performance.

The fact-checks landed fast and hard.

Trump claimed gas was below $2.30 in most states; AAA’s national average was $2.92.

He said egg prices dropped 60 percent; Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed closer to 48 percent.

He framed himself as inheriting record inflation; it had already fallen from its 2022 peak to 3 percent before he took office, per ABC News.

He called the recent tax bill the largest cut in history; the Tax Foundation ranked it sixth.

He claimed zero border crossings in nine months; ABC called that outright false.

Meanwhile, the costs Americans are actually feeling… coffee up 34 percent, energy up over 6 percent, tariff-driven grocery increases went unmentioned. It was consistent all night- round up the wins, erase the context, and replace evidence with BS noise.

But the moment with the most lasting constitutional weight had nothing to do with grocery prices. Days before the speech, the Supreme Court struck down the President’s sweeping tariff authority under IEEPA. His response from the lectern, with several justices seated directly in front of him, was to call the ruling “unfortunate” and announce he would pursue alternative legal pathways to keep imposing tariffs without Congress, per CNBC and CNN. He repeated the debunked claim that foreign countries pay the tariff costs, not American consumers.

Within minutes of the speech beginning, Rep. Al Green of Texas was escorted out after holding a sign reading “Black People Aren’t Apes” a response to a racist video Trump shared and later deleted depicting the Obamas as primates. Axios reported that Sen. Markwayne Mullin tried to grab the sign from Green’s hands, and NBC confirmed Rep. Troy Nehls attempted the same near the door.

Later, when Democrats stayed seated during a call to stand, the President told them they should be ashamed. Rep. Ilhan Omar responded that he has killed Americans, a reference to two U.S. citizens who were killed during federal immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota, Renee and Alex. More than a dozen Epstein survivors sat in the gallery as guests of Democratic lawmakers, according to NBC and TIME, demanding transparency that the two-hour speech never once addressed.

An ABC/Washington Post/Ipsos poll released Sunday put the President’s disapproval at 60 percent, a second-term high.
