I don’t care if this title makes me very unpopular, given the context of the situation we’re finding ourselves in: I don’t care if this blog offends some people; the truth is that both Ukraine and Russia violated the Minsk Agreements concerning the initiation of a ceasefire, the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the conflict zone, and the establishment of a special status for the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine.

Some people need to understand that the Minsk Agreement refers to a set of ceasefire agreements negotiated in the Belarusian capital of Minsk in 2014 and 2015, aimed at resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine. The negotiations were led by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). They involved representatives from Ukraine, Russia, the self-proclaimed Donetsk, Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), France, and Germany. Therefore, besides Ukraine and Russia, France and Germany were also involved in the negotiations and played a crucial role in brokering the agreements. The representatives from the DPR and LPR were also present at the talks but were not recognized as independent states by Ukraine or most other countries.

The idea behind Minsk Agreement

The Minsk Agreement was aimed at resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine, which began in 2014 after the ousting of the pro-Russian Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Yanukovych was indeed removed from power following massive protests against his government, sparked by his refusal to sign an association agreement with the European Union and his perceived alignment with Russia. However, the conflict in eastern Ukraine was not solely a result of Yanukovych’s ousting. It was also fueled by a range of factors, including long-standing political and economic grievances among the population in the region, a desire for greater autonomy, and a sense of cultural and linguistic distinctiveness from the rest of Ukraine. Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its support for separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine also played a significant role in the conflict. The Minsk Agreement aimed to address the underlying causes, driving the conflict and to establish a lasting ceasefire, but the implementation of the agreement has been difficult and the conflict has continued with periodic flare-ups of violence.

The main points of the Minsk Agreement

The Minsk Agreement, which was signed in September 2014 and February 2015, consists of a set of 13 points aimed at resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine. The main points of the agreement include:

A ceasefire between Ukrainian government forces and separatist rebels in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern Ukraine.

The withdrawal of heavy weapons from the frontlines and the creation of a buffer zone between the two sides.

The release of all hostages and prisoners taken during the conflict.

The establishment of a constitutional reform process in Ukraine, which would include decentralization of power and recognition of the special status of certain regions.

The holding of local elections in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, under Ukrainian law and international monitoring.

The restoration of control over the Ukrainian side of the international border with Russia by the Ukrainian government, following local elections.

The withdrawal of all foreign armed groups, weapons, and mercenaries from Ukrainian territory.

The implementation of an economic recovery plan for the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, including the restoration of social payments and pensions.

The guarantee of free use of the Russian language in Ukraine.

The creation of working groups to address specific issues related to the implementation of the agreement.

Let’s start with Russia’s role in violating the Minsk Agreements:

First, Russia should not have annexed Crimea from Ukraine: they had no authority to annex a peninsula from another country. Second, if Russians were smart, they could have found ways to sanction Ukraine economically without getting involved in the killings of Ukrainian civilians: Russia has no right to invade Ukraine; they are the primary aggressor in this conflict. Third, Russia is not worthy of being a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council; neither is China because both countries are governed by Fascist regimes that threaten the security of this planet and the security of nations that value fundamental rights — — there has to be a way to expel those countries.

Russia has violated the Minsk Agreements, signed in 2015, to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine. The Minsk agreements called for a ceasefire, the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the conflict zone, and the establishment of a special status for Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Russia has violated the ceasefire by providing military and financial support to the separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine. This includes the provision of heavy weapons, ammunition, and personnel to the separatists, which has contributed to the continued hostilities in the region. In addition, Russia has failed to use its influence over the separatists to implement the provisions of the Minsk Agreements. This includes failing to ensure the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the conflict zone and failing to support the establishment of a special status for the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Furthermore, Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, which was widely condemned by the international community, has been seen as a violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Let’s also talk about Ukraine’s violations of the Minsk Agreements

Ukraine and the separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine have been accused of violating the Minsk Agreements, which were signed in 2015 to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine. The Minsk agreements called for a ceasefire, the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the conflict zone, and the establishment of a special status for Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions. With that said, the ceasefire has been repeatedly violated, and both sides have been accused of failing to implement the agreements fully. Ukraine violated the Minsk agreements by failing to grant special status to the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which was one of the critical provisions of the arrangements. It has also failed to implement constitutional reforms that would decentralize power and grant greater regional autonomy. On the other hand, separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine have violated the ceasefire, continuing to engage in hostilities and failing to withdraw heavy weapons from the conflict zone.

Unpopular opinion

Both sides have violated the Minsk Agreement, and the conflict in eastern Ukraine is complex and multifaceted. The competition has devastated civilians, with tens of thousands killed and millions displaced. The root causes of the conflict are indeed complex and involve a range of factors, including political, economic, and historical grievances. The desire of Ukraine to join NATO and the European Union, and Russia’s desire to maintain its influence in the region, have been contributing factors to the conflict. However, it is essential to note that the battle is not solely the result of external factors but also involves deep-seated internal divisions within Ukraine. Regardless of the causes of the conflict, innocent civilians have suffered the most, and the international community must continue to work towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict and support those affected by the violence. This will require a sustained effort by all parties involved to fully implement the Minsk Agreement and to address the underlying issues driving the conflict. The annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 was a clear violation of international law and the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and the subsequent conflict in eastern Ukraine has resulted in significant suffering for civilians on both sides of the conflict. The international community, including the United States and the European Union, responded to these actions by imposing economic sanctions on Russia.

These sanctions have significantly impacted the Russian economy, particularly in the energy and financial sectors, and have been a source of significant economic pain for many Russians. However, the effectiveness of the sanctions in achieving their intended political goals is a matter of debate, with some arguing that they have not succeeded in changing Russian behavior and have instead served to entrench the Kremlin’s position and undermine the prospects for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.

Conclusion

Regardless of one’s perspective on the effectiveness of sanctions, it is essential to seek a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict and hold those responsible for human rights abuses and violations of international law accountable for their actions. This will require a sustained effort by the international community to find ways for peaceful resolutions. We must note that any act of aggression by one country against another without justifiable cause, such as self-defense, violates international law and the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity that underpin the global system. All countries are responsible for respecting these principles and working towards a peaceful resolution of conflicts through diplomacy and dialogue.

While defense contractors do have a role to play in providing necessary equipment and support to armed forces, it is important to ensure that their activities are conducted responsibly and ethically and that they are not contributing to the escalation or perpetuation of conflicts. This can be achieved through transparency and accountability measures, such as requiring contractors to adhere to international humanitarian law and human rights standards and ensuring their activities are subject to oversight and regulation.

Like all peoples, Ukrainians have the right to live in a sovereign and independent country. Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are enshrined in international law and recognized by the international community. The conflict in eastern Ukraine, which began in 2014, has challenged Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, with separatist rebels in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of east Ukraine seeking independence and, in some cases, annexation by Russia. The conflict has resulted in significant human suffering, with tens of thousands killed; possibly even millions of people, and millions displaced from their homes.

The international community needs to continue to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and to work towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict based on respect for international law and the territorial integrity of Ukraine. This will require a sustained effort by all parties involved to fully implement the Minsk Agreement and to address the underlying issues driving the conflict, including political and economic grievances in the region.

It is in the best interest of both Russia and China to support a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. The ongoing conflict has destabilized the region, and has the potential to undermine regional stability and security. For Russia, the conflict has resulted in economic sanctions and political isolation, which have had a negative impact on the country’s economy and international standing. Ending the conflict would alleviate these pressures and allow Russia to focus on other priorities, such as economic development and improving relations with the international community.

For China, stability and security in the region are essential for its economic and strategic interests. Both Russia and China should have a role to play in supporting a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, and their support could be instrumental in achieving a lasting peace. This will require a sustained effort by all parties involved to fully implement the Minsk Agreement and to address the underlying issues driving the conflict, including political and economic grievances in the region.
