Betting their lives on zero

The suicide club — this is exactly what the current Russian army is, quite apart from also being an advanced business enterprise where it is both possible and fashionable to make a quick buck. However, the suicide club within it is the most important part; it is its very essence. It is for this essence that people go there. They go to die, to put a period at the end of a meaningless life, because they are simply exhausted by the search for meaning.
Truth be told, they are worn out by the sheer fatigue of dragging their bodies through life. And it is better this way than dying of a common cold. Better to become a portrait with a caption on a wall of honor, so that a wife gets an apartment, a child gets into college, and the memory of their former empty life is erased — so that, by redeeming their lives through death, they might clear a space for their family’s happiness. Since nothing worked out for them with it, let it work out without it. But no, it’s not all that simple — after all, this is a club, a casino, which means it’s a game.
Our country, which once aimed at the happiness of all humanity, began with the conviction that “man is made for happiness, as a bird for flight.” That is, he is destined for happiness — perhaps later, in the future, but destined nonetheless. In reality, however, it manufactured millions of unhappy souls, lost in search of the meaning of their existence on earth, tangled in a bleak despondency from which the only way out seemed like that of a hedgehog or a worm, but with a full, conscious awareness of it.
How so? Surely, life wasn’t given for suffering. No, on television, the country still continued to hope and even believe in the “bird of tomorrow’s happiness” that would surely call, because it couldn’t fail to call — it had no right not to. It continued, but somehow by inertia, out of habit. Until suddenly the bosses said that it was one’s own fault, that you didn’t forge your own happiness — everyone is to blame individually.
Each on their own, and these “each ones” fill vast, miserable spaces. Our country is large, there is plenty of room for everything, and look at how much space there is for unhappy people — you can’t walk across it, you can’t drive around it. And there is no way for people to escape from there — sheer bleakness.
Right then, the perpetual and eternally new boss thought it over and decided: there is only one way out for everyone — to go to war. War, of course, is a space of calamity and death, but it is also a Russian roulette where there is bound to be an empty chamber in the cylinder of the revolver, where there is surely no bullet. How many such empty spots there are in the cylinder is unknown, but they are definitely there, and one must believe in it. In any case, war puts an end to this loathsome sequence of dragging days and provides meaning either on the other side of life, as a heroically fallen soldier, or for a reboot in this life — for one more attempt to become the blacksmith of one’s own happiness.
And so, from the miserable spaces, files of beaten, life-exhausted Russians streamed toward the war in hopes of finding a way out of the bleakness. One might say they have the right if they want to, if only they kept it among themselves and thrashed each other. But they came to a foreign country and began killing people who had absolutely no intention of dying and who would still be living today if not for this invasion of Russians fleeing from boredom and meaninglessness into war
Well, yes, for Russians it is a game, a game of “smashing Ukrainian Nazis.” Because tomorrow they can start smashing other “Nazis.” New columns of those ready to stake their lives in banzai charges are easily assembled across our miserable Russian spaces. A war-game, so speaking of its purpose is pointless: it exists as long as it is replenished by new players, or until the casino goes bust and goes bankrupt.
Yes, indeed, in Russia they turned war into a casino — a huge one, the largest casino in the world, the very epitome of a postmodern world busy inventing new games to escape the boredom of sifting through decayed meanings. Russia has decisively stepped further than anyone else and insists that no one interfere, get confused, or meddle in the game — otherwise, a Big Boom, and that’s it. Everything for everyone. That’s how it is, Russia — reckless, mindless.
What is in it, in this casino, for other Russians who do not directly participate in these mad games? Those who watch from the sidelines, even twisting a finger at their temple — they might have already succeeded in their quest for happiness, or hope to tomorrow, but they have no intention of putting their own lives on zero. Nothing so far; we are waiting for the scheme to burst, for the circus to leave town. Because the casino’s only revenues are ruined Ukrainian cities and killed and maimed Ukrainians and Russians.
Nothing for now, but later, shame in the next generations — the generations of our children and grandchildren, who will certainly demand answers from us for simply watching all this horror, watching and failing to stop it. And the excuse that we wanted to, we really wanted to, but couldn’t, won’t fly. They will paint us all in the color of shame if they are alive. Yes, if they are alive.
