The Day I Walked Into Strategic Vision Institute With Nothing But a Resume and Hope I’ve been sending applications online for weeks. Cover letters, emails, follow-ups — the usual digital routine where you hit send and then just... wait. At some point during our Amal fellowship, we were pushed to do something different: show up in person. Drop your resume. Talk to a real human being. I won’t lie — the idea made me uncomfortable, which is probably exactly why I needed to do it. I chose Strategic Vision Institute in Islamabad. SVI works on nuclear policy, strategic affairs, and regional security — pretty much the intersection of everything I studied at QAU. Before going, I spent time on their website, went through their research publications, noted down the names of their department heads and senior researchers. I wanted to walk in knowing who I was hoping to meet, not just wander up to a reception desk with blank eyes. The morning I went, I must have rehearsed my elevator pitch ten times in the car. By the time I reached the office, I had it down — but the second I walked through the door, a chunk of that confidence quietly left the building without me. The receptionist was polite but firm. The relevant person was in a meeting. I said I could wait. That small decision — just deciding to stay — turned out to matter. About twenty minutes later, I got five minutes with a staff member from the research team. Not the HR head, but someone. I handed over my resume, mentioned my research background in strategic studies, and kept it short. What I learned is that showing up physically signals something an email simply can’t — that you’re serious enough to be uncomfortable. I didn’t walk out with an interview slot, but I walked out with a name, an email address, and a follow-up reason. Next time, I’d go earlier in the week and earlier in the day. Tuesdays and Wednesdays before noon — people are more available and less mentally checked out.
