I Wrote My First Book for My Daughter

The story behind my first book

Finally, the day is here we(me and my 5 year old daughter) received the copy of our first book today.

Every time I write an article, my 5 year old wants to know what I wrote. Some topics are difficult to explain to her, but I contrive to tell her the gist of it in a way she could understand.

To her, every article I write is a story and every single time, she would ask me, “Mumma, can you write a story for me too?”

As her 6th birthday is approaching, I decided to write for her “a story book”.

I know in this digital age stories are available on single prompt, but “machines can’t feel a good read and can’t write a good feel.”

I want my daughter to fully experience and cherish the gift of reading and writing which no other creature has on earth.

Therefore, I decided to make her part of this story writing journey and she was totally down to help with her storybook. I may have written the words, but we created the stories together.

For last two months, our bedtimes were storytelling sessions. After finishing one story, she would excitedly think of another.

From stories, characters, pictures, names, to designing book cover she was my little co-author for everything, and her glee fuelled me to keep writing.

At times it became comedic struggle to involve her because I had to negotiate to add at-least one boy character and not to color everything pink. Regardless, I managed to keep parts of the book neutral with animal stories and different themes.

This book is not just a collection of stories. It is a memory of our conversations, our bedtime imaginations, our little arguments, and a mother-daughter journey captured in pages.

May be when she grows older, she will look back at this little book and think we created something meaningful together and remember that at the age of five, her imagination was powerful enough to become a real book in the world.
