Why I Replaced My Heavy Bag With Something That Fights Back
The CCBall is a striking training tool I developed. It is the closest thing to sparring without a partner. When you strike it, the ball rebounds off the wall and comes back at you — forcing an immediate response. Instead of hitting a static target, you’re constantly reacting. You move, strike, defend, and adjust in real time — using footwork, head movement, and control just like you would in a fight.

I created the CCBall in University. It soon became my main training tool. I have used it for several years, and have travelled across several countries training with it when I couldn’t train in clubs. I am now trying to get it produced for consumers as a product. Please help me by preordering the CCBall here and following the brand account on Instagram. I explain why I think it is one of the greatest innovations in striking training tools below.

The Heavy Bag
The most common piece of striking training equipment is the heavy bag. This is for good reason. You can hit the heavy bag with a lot of force and practice combinations easily. It is widely used in clubs, gyms, and homes. The heavy bag develops power and conditioning. Fighters and practitioners can train strikes at high repetitions. This is necessary for neural development and the automaticity of strikes and movements that need to be executed quickly in fight situations.
As you can see below, I loved my heavy bag and used it a lot.
Where the Heavy Bag falls short
However, these things are only part of what fighting requires and what sparring provides. The heavy bag doesn’t respond. You can hit it cleanly, but nothing comes back. Nothing challenges you, or focuses you to react or adjust. There is no exchange. This is probably why, amongst the 12% who own a heavy bag, 38% of them use it less than once a week after the first 3 months. The heavy bag is not engaging — it allows you to train, but unless you have high levels of motivation like I did, chances are you will stop using it.
Why does this matter for Sparring?
When your training has no response or interaction, you’re not training the full process. You’re not fighting, and many people who train do so to fight or spar.
Sparring is a continuous exchange. Strikes are not isolated actions; they are not clean sequences or one-sided exchanges. Strikes invite counters, opponents change the situation, and force you into decisions. The result — you can look sharp on the bag, but in sparring, your timing might feel off when an opponent adjusts their tempo and speed. Your reactions might feel delayed, and exchanges can break the combinations you plan. Timing is the missing skill trained. Coaches rank it number 1. It ranks number 5 in actual training time. Why? Because it requires external, unpredictable stimulus, which no existing solo tool provides — not the reflex ball, not the sparbar, not the reflex bar.
This is where CCBall changes the martial arts landscape. Its movement is not constrained to a fixed path. It returns at different speeds, angles, and heights, forcing you to constantly adjust, measure, and decide responses.
Why should many switch to the CCBall?
When I broke my heavy bag, I switched to a new method of training. I innovated this after discovering that a reflex ball, when placed next to a wall, produces. This rebound allowed me to effectively fight and do so at high speeds and intensity. It was incredible. I didn’t get a new heavy bag, and continued to develop my understanding of how the CCBall worked as an effective training tool. I developed early prototypes and explored different setup combinations and different variants of the ball.
To cement the CCBall’s position as the best training equipment for homes to train between sessions, it is also an effective training target. It allows you to practice strikes at high volumes as you can strike the ball. Its size allows users to emphasize accuracy, control, and balance as well as power strikes. “CC” stood for coordination and combination. This was because I emphasized movement in my early martial arts training. Without the mass of a bag to absorb my strikes, I relied on balance and core muscles to maintain control. Without the allure that heavy bags have, of striking with power, focus shifted to my mind muscle connection, contractions, and tension. I found this very beneficial as I became a more knowledgeable and confident mover.
The Sparring Gap
You might think, “I’ll just spar more,” but sparring is often inconsistent, limited, and dependent on other people. This is essentially the problem CCBall is designed to solve. What you essentially buy is a fight interaction. With CCBall, your training can become more effective by training the exchange itself, rather than just the strike.
