Recent research shows tech professionals are facing age discrimination by 29 — a full decade earlier than other sectors.

Background
My articles usually cover technical topics like Python, AI, Software Architecture, IT Security, etc. The idea of this article emerged with someone posting a link in an internal office forum and wondering why there don’t seem to be many people above a certain age in our office or among our customers.
Coincidentally, on the same day I read some articles about startups with typical words like “young and energetic”. And as someone who is neither in my 20s nor 50s, it got me thinking. I began looking into the topic and making some notes. This article is simply a tidied-up version of those notes.

The Scope of the Problem
In the UK’s tech sector, professionals begin experiencing age discrimination at just 29 years old — a full decade earlier than the national average of 41. Even more troubling, these same workers are considered ‘too old’ for their industry by age 38. For an industry that prides itself on innovation and disruption, the technology sector has a serious age problem that threatens both individual careers and broader economic growth.
As you dig in, the numbers start to become stark 🫤. CWJobs research found that 41% of tech workers have reported encountering age discrimination in the workplace, compared to 27% across other UK industries. 61% of workers in the tech sector also believe that older employees experience prejudice in their industry — the highest rate of any UK sector.
The UK government’s Diversity in UK Tech report, published in June 2025, provides authoritative context. Whilst older professionals aged 50 and above represent 31% of the working-age population, they comprise only a fifth of the tech workforce. The tech sector has the lowest proportion of workers aged over 50 of any UK STEM sector. So, it seems my colleague had a point 🤔
Internationally, the state of affairs is similar. Recent AARP research from 2025 shows that approximately 64% of workers aged 50-plus have witnessed or experienced age discrimination in the workplace. In case you are wondering AARP was formerly known as the American Association for Retired Persons. They focus on issues affecting people aged 50+.
The Economic Impact
Age discrimination costs the US economy an estimated £670 billion annually through lost productivity, turnover, and missed opportunities for mentorship. For businesses, unnecessary turnover drives recruitment expenses, institutional knowledge is lost, innovation suffers from homogeneous teams, and legal liabilities mount.
How Age Bias Manifests
UK tech workers begin to perceive age-related bias at just 37 years old on average — a full decade earlier than the national average of 47. 43% of tech workers have witnessed or experienced age discrimination, this bias manifests in hiring (47% not offered jobs), career progression (31% overlooked for promotion), and workplace culture (28% excluded from social activities).

The Language Problem
The everyday experience of ageism manifests through dismissive language like ‘Old Fart’ (61%), ‘Dinosaur’ (56%), and ‘Old Git’ (58%). Perhaps most telling, 60% of tech workers have heard it said that “old people don’t understand technology” — a particularly ironic statement in an industry built by experienced professionals. Perhaps I am lucky enough that I have yet to overhear or experience conversations of this nature 😮💨
Structural Barriers
Beyond overt discrimination, structural barriers quietly exclude older professionals. The government report identifies how unconscious and conscious biases significantly influence workplace culture. Recruitment practices that emphasise “digital native” status, use images of exclusively young teams, or seek candidates with “fresh perspectives”. These phrases effectively signal that older applicants aren’t welcome.
When Age and Gender Intersect
As if age bias alone wasn’t enough. The data reveals something else: age discrimination in tech doesn’t affect everyone equally. Women aged 40–65 report experiencing age discrimination at higher rates (64%) compared to men (59%), and the gap widens in technology sectors. Research shows women under 30 are almost twice as likely as their male peers to experience unwanted comments about their age — meaning gendered ageism affects women throughout their careers, not just later.
For women in tech specifically, the pattern creates what researchers call “gendered ageism” — where existing sexism in the industry compounds with age bias. In Scotland, research with women over 50 in the Information and Communication sector found they worried potential employers would prefer younger candidates, with many choosing not to apply for roles due to perceived age bias in recruitment. Several described feeling that whilst their experience was valued in theory, younger people were favoured in practice.

The pay gap tells its own story. In Scotland, the gender pay gap is highest for women aged 50–64, meaning the financial penalty for being female in tech actually worsens with age. Women described observing male colleagues with similar or less experience receiving better pay and faster promotions, yet most felt unable to challenge this — partly due to uncertainty about whether they had full information, partly from not wanting to “cause a fuss.”
Where men’s experience tends to be celebrated as they age, women in midlife frequently describe feeling pushed into the shadows, overlooked for strategic roles despite proven capabilities. One woman interviewed in the Scottish research explained how assumptions about technology adoption affected her: “It was difficult when they assumed that I would know the latest technology…you did get the rolled eyes…as if to say, come on! But I’m not stupid.”
The government’s Diversity in UK Tech report notes that 72% of women in tech report experiencing sexism, from wage disparities to comments questioning their expertise. For older women, these experiences layer onto age-related assumptions about adaptability or ambition. The combination can be quietly devastating: many midlife women leave tech altogether, their departures so silent that organisations don’t notice the pattern.
The Human Cost
76% of workers who have experienced ageism report negative impacts on their mental health, with many feeling stressed and demotivated. Technology workers experiencing ageism are more likely to be excluded from benefits (39%) and struggle to establish workplace friendships (30%). Most strikingly, half of tech workers who experience age discrimination often choose to leave their jobs altogether.
Despite the severity of the issue, two-thirds (64%) of ageism victims don’t report discrimination, with 33% citing a desire “not to cause a fuss”. Whilst 77% of UK workers know age discrimination is illegal, this drops to just 47% amongst tech industry victims — allowing discriminatory practices to persist unchallenged.
What Organisations Lose
The organisational cost of age bias is substantial.
When tech companies sideline older workers, they sacrifice institutional knowledge accumulated over years, mentorship capacity that supports younger workers’ development, market understanding of mature customer segments, and risk management perspective on what approaches have failed before. Diverse teams — including age diversity — produce more innovative solutions and better business outcomes.
Evidence-Based Solutions
Several strategies show promise in addressing age bias:
Competency-Based Frameworks: Standardised competency frameworks such as SFIA or DDAT establish shared language for measuring technical skills, creating pathways based on capability rather than assumptions.
Blind Recruitment: Removing age-related information from applications ensures candidates are evaluated based on skills and experience alone. Companies implementing blind hiring report more diverse candidate pools and better quality hires.
Intersectional Monitoring: The Scottish research recommends employers monitor how age affects recruitment, pay, and progression outcomes, and crucially, how interventions around gender pay gaps affect women of different ages differently. Most organisations track gender metrics but ignore age entirely.
Continuous Learning: Providing opportunities for professional development helps older workers stay updated whilst demonstrating organisational commitment to their growth. Research suggests training should be offered sensitively, avoiding assumptions that older employees need more help with technology than their younger colleagues.
Inclusive Culture: Emphasising diverse perspectives and encouraging intergenerational collaboration leads to more innovative solutions and stronger team dynamics.
Policy and Accountability
The UK’s Equality Act 2010 provides legal protection, making age discrimination unlawful. However, legal frameworks alone prove insufficient. The government report argues that the industry must fundamentally transform cultures, processes, and systems through accountability mechanisms with DEI metrics tied to leadership performance, mandatory reporting of age diversity data, and policy initiatives that act as catalysts for progress.
Several organisations demonstrate best practices: flexible working arrangements that support retention, transparent career frameworks that reduce bias, deliberately mixed-age project teams that improve problem-solving, and age-neutral recruitment language that encourages diverse applicants.
The Way Forward
The data reveals an industry at a crossroads. With worker shortages in critical technical areas and an ageing population, the tech sector can’t afford to discard experienced professionals. Unfortunately, discriminatory practices continue to push talented individuals out — often at the peak of their capabilities. So what can be done? Here are my unqualified suggestions.
For Individuals
For professionals experiencing age discrimination:
- Document incidents with dates and details
- Report through HR or ACAS, maintain current skills, research age-positive employers before applying
- Connect with professional networks focused on mature tech workers.
- Proactively engage with your employer to help establish internal forums. And if already present actively participate to increase awareness
- Add this as a regular item to your agenda for 1–1 discussions — whether you are a people manager or an individual contributor
For Organisations
Organisations in the tech sector:
- Implement transparent career frameworks
- Embed DEI metrics into organisational performance. This is particularly important in the light of recent events where an entire country has seen DEI policies scrapped.
- Expand flexible working options, and build genuinely inclusive environments.
- Regularly poll employees to get a sense of whether age-related factors are creeping in and hindering their jobs, among other things.
- Crucially, recognise that age discrimination intersects with other forms of bias — addressing it effectively means examining how policies affect different groups differently.
Summary
Experience brings perspective, judgement, mentorship, and technical depth that complements younger colleagues’ energy and fresh viewpoints. Innovation has no age limit — but discrimination carries a real cost, both human and economic.
Progress requires moving beyond good intentions to concrete action: accountability mechanisms, cultural change, transparent processes, and genuine commitment to valuing professionals throughout their careers.
