Across Mexico, whispered accounts tell of a haunting nurse, known as “La Planchada,” who drifts through the sterile corridors of hospitals nationwide. Clad in a pristine, white, starched, and impeccably ironed uniform-a relic of the 1920s and 30s-she earned her name, which translates to “the ironed one,” from her eerily flawless appearance.

Rumors of “La Planchada,” a phantom figure, began circulating in the mid-20th century, primarily within “EL HOSPITAL JUAREZ” in Mexico City. The legend recounts that La Planchada, a nurse at the hospital, suffered a broken heart after discovering her doctor-lover’s betrayal. This profound grief allegedly led to her neglect of duties, a horrifying oversight resulting in the deaths of numerous patients.

She eventually succumbed to sorrow, condemned to wander the aisles! Yet, her nature transformed. She sought to mend the irreparable harm she had caused, dedicating herself to an eternal shift, her presence now a chilling solace rather than a harbinger of indifference.

Throughout Mexico, patients in various hospitals frequently report the uncanny appearance of a kind, young woman in their rooms. She is described as having a maternal demeanor, administering medication, and checking vital signs with an unsettling grace. However, when inquired about the following day, this nurse is nowhere to be found, vanishing like a breath in cold air. Most testimonies describe her as “impeccably dressed but in an old-fashioned way.” Upon hearing this, doctors are often unsettled, a cold dread creeping in as they realize the patients are referring to the ever-present “La Planchada.”

While other accounts of this nurse exist, some present a far less benevolent, indeed quite ominous, perspective.

I’m going to tell you a story I heard from my good friend’s father, a doctor who has served in many hospitals in my hometown, where the whispers of La Planchada are just as chilling.

As dawn struggled to break through the pre-operation gloom, the doctor arrived at the hospital for an urgent surgery. The nurse assigned to assist him had called in sick, leaving him to prepare his own instruments. Heading to the upstairs washroom, a peculiar sensation washed over him-he felt an unseen presence trailing him. The unsettling feeling intensified, a prickle on his skin, as he was certain he was alone on that deserted floor.

Upon reaching the washroom, he was startled to find his instruments meticulously cleaned and arranged on a nearby table. A hushed whisper, “Ya quedó Doctor,” meaning “it’s taken care of, Doctor,” emanated from behind him, seeming to hang in the air. He glanced over, catching a fleeting glimpse of an immaculate white robe, the crisp fabric hinting at a presence that wasn’t quite there. He knew who had been there, a spectral helper who, as quickly as they appeared, vanished without a trace, leaving only the lingering scent of starched linen and an unanswered question.
