Electrify America opened a station with 20 chargers at 350 kW each in Santa Barbara. For the driver, it is just a place to charge quickly. For the grid, it is a very different conversation.

News about EV charging often sounds routine. A new station opened. More chargers were added. CCS is available. NACS will come later. Drivers get more convenience, adoption grows, infrastructure moves forward.

But what caught my attention here was not the station itself. It was the simple math.

20 chargers at 350 kW each means up to 7 MW of nameplate charging capacity. Yes, in real life, not every charger will necessarily pull maximum power at the same time. But the number itself already shows where fast charging is going. This is no longer “an outlet near a parking lot.” It is a load that looks like a separate urban electrical site.

The station opened in downtown Santa Barbara, at the former Greyhound bus depot on Carrillo Street. I like that detail. This used to be a point for buses and the old transportation logic. Now that same land is becoming a node for electric vehicles.

The city did not just get a new charging station. It got a new type of electrical load.

Fast charging is no longer only about cars. It is about how much power a city can deliver into one point.

The most interesting part here is not even the 20 chargers. Electrify America installed a 1.9 MW battery energy storage system on site. The company calls it its largest public BESS deployment to date. The battery is designed to store energy from the grid during periods of lower demand and when solar energy is available, then help the station during periods of high demand.

That shows the real problem. If you place a lot of 350 kW chargers and connect them directly to the grid, the questions come fast: connection limits, demand peaks, expensive upgrades, local load, transformers, cables. A battery next to a charging station does not create magic, but it gives the site more flexibility.

It helps not only to charge cars, but also to manage the moment when that electricity is needed.

A charging station no longer sells only kilowatts. It sells speed without the full hit to the grid.

Electrify America says this is its second station in Santa Barbara and one of four large-format stations. For the company, large-format means a site with 20 or more chargers. This is no longer a small location for a couple of cars. It is a format closer to urban-scale electrical infrastructure.

And this is where the EV story becomes very physical. More electric vehicles do not only mean more battery packs in cars. They mean more power cables, chargers, power electronics, switchgear, transformers, cooling, parking layout, software, payment systems and coordination with the grid.

When charging moves to 350 kW, speed stops being just a convenient feature. It becomes an engineering problem.

In charging stories like this, it is easy to look only at cars, apps and connectors. But behind fast charging, there is a longer materials chain: copper cabling, transformers, switchgear, substations, batteries. That is why early copper-gold projects also remain part of the broader electrification picture. NovaRed Mining, with Wilmac in British Columbia, is still at an early stage — soil sampling, IP/AMT surveys, drill targets and a field season. Not a production story, but one of those early steps where a future metal pipeline begins.

So this Santa Barbara station is not just another point on the charging map. It shows how the very idea of transportation infrastructure is changing.

A gas station used to be about fuel, tanks and trucks.

Now charging is increasingly about megawatts, batteries, grid timing and local electrical capacity.

Because when 350 kW charging becomes normal, the question will no longer be only about the car.

The question will be whether the city is ready for that kind of load.
