Day 14 of Learning German 🇩🇪 — I Started Listening (And Real German Felt Fast)

For the past 13 days, I’ve been learning German step by step.

Words. Sentences. Conversations. Feelings. Even short stories.

Yesterday, I tried to speak a full story.

That was difficult.

But today?

I faced something even harder.

I started listening to real German.

And honestly…

It felt fast. Very fast.

🚀 Why I Started Listening

Until now, everything was controlled.

  • I read slowly
  • I spoke slowly
  • I understood my own sentences

But real language is different.

People don’t speak slowly.

They don’t pause after every word.

So I asked myself:

“Can I understand German when I hear it?”

That became my goal today.

🧠 What I Focused On Today

I didn’t try to understand everything.

Instead, I focused on:

  • Listening to simple German audio
  • Catching familiar words
  • Not translating everything

🔊 What I Listened To

I started with very basic sentences.

Things like:

Hallo, wie geht es dir? Ich lerne Deutsch. Ich komme aus Deutschland.

🔊 With Pronunciation

Hallo, wie geht es dir? (HAH-loh, vee gayt es deer) Ich lerne Deutsch (ikh LEHR-neh DOYCH) Ich komme aus Deutschland (ikh KOM-uh ows DOYCH-land)

🤯 The First Problem — It Was Too Fast

When I first listened…

I understood almost nothing.

Even simple sentences sounded fast.

My brain couldn’t catch the words.

At one point, I thought:

“Do I really know anything?”

💡 The Shift That Helped Me

Instead of trying to understand everything…

I changed my approach:

👉 Listen for keywords

Example:

If I hear:

Ich lerne Deutsch jeden Tag

I try to catch:

  • Ich
  • Deutsch
  • Tag

Even if I miss the rest.

🔁 Repetition Changed Everything

I didn’t listen once.

I repeated the same sentence many times.

At first:

  • Confusing
  • Fast
  • Unclear

After repeating:

  • Slower
  • Clearer
  • Familiar

🔊 Listening + Reading Together

This helped me a lot.

  1. Read the sentencE
  2. Listened to it
  3. Repeated it

Example:

Ich bin glücklich (ikh bin GLUEK-likh)

This made it easier to connect sound + meaning.

⚠️ What Felt Difficult

Let’s be honest.

Today was frustrating.

I struggled with:

  • Speed of speech
  • Missing words
  • Feeling lost

Sometimes I understood nothing.

💡 What Helped Me Continue

I reminded myself:

  • This is normal
  • Listening takes time
  • Even small understanding is progress

So I didn’t stop.

🧠 What I Realized Today

This was a big realization:

Listening is a different skill.

Knowing words is not enough.

You need to train your ears.

📚 What I Reinforced Today

I didn’t learn many new words.

But I improved recognition of:

  • Ich
  • bin
  • lerne
  • Deutsch
  • komme

Hearing them helped a lot.

🎯 What I Learned Today

  • Listening is hard at the beginning
  • You don’t need to understand everything
  • Repetition is powerful
  • Small progress matters

🔥 What’s Next?

Now that I started listening…

Tomorrow, I want to:

Combine listening and speaking together.

Repeat what I hear.

Let’s see if that improves my pronunciation.

💬 Final Thoughts

Day 14 felt challenging.

But important.

Because today…

I trained my ears.

If you’re learning German too, try this:

Don’t just read and write.

Start listening early.

Even if you don’t understand everything.

Because that’s how real language begins.
