Suppressed Tears

Is crying truly a source of emotional release? Does it actually bring comfort, or does it simply cause the heart and chest to ache more than it heals?

For a long time, I have associated tears with weakness. Whenever I felt overwhelmed by something seemingly trivial — whether it was watching a sad movie, seeing a stray animal I couldn’t rescue, or even experiencing moments of joy like passing an exam, satisfying a long-held craving, or buying something I worked hard to save for — I forced myself to hold it in. I refused to let those tears fall because I desperately wanted to protect my image. I wanted to be seen as resilient and unbreakable, someone who could handle the weight of the world without shedding a single tear.

However, a recent experience completely shattered that composure, leaving me utterly confused. I had gone to bed feeling completely fine, with nothing weighing on my mind. Yet, I woke up abruptly at 2:30 AM with a sudden, throbbing headache. The air was stiflingly hot, and my bed felt uncomfortably warm, making it impossible to drift back to sleep. Wondering if I was falling ill or if my insomnia was returning, I picked up my phone to scroll through random videos, hoping the familiar routine would lull me back to sleep. But tonight, the distraction failed, and the restlessness remained.

Hours ticked by, and just as exhaustion was finally beginning to settle in, the tears suddenly came. Out of nowhere, an intense wave of longing washed over me, and I found myself deeply missing someone I care about immensely. I reached for the stuffed toy they had given me and hugged it tightly against my chest, completely bewildered by my own reaction. It made no sense to me — we had just spent time together recently, yet here I was, overwhelmed by an inexplicable grief in the middle of the night.

I desperately commanded myself to stop, but the tears refused to listen. Every time I wiped them away, fresh ones took their place, and a sharp, suffocating pain began to tighten in my throat and chest. It made me wonder: is this the cost of suppression? Because I have spent so long bottling up my emotions and denying myself the right to cry over the little things, did all that contained sorrow finally break through the dam?

It is deeply frustrating that this release hurts so much, especially when all I want is to maintain my composure and avoid looking fragile to the rest of the world.
