Interoceptive Awareness and the Vagus Nerve: Important Elements in the Diet-Mental Health Relationship

Interoceptive Awareness and the Vagus Nerve

Interoceptive Awareness and the Vagus Nerve

Interoception, often called the “eighth sense,” refers to the perception of the body’s internal physiological state. It involves the reception, encoding, and representation of internal bodily signals in the brain and nervous system, along with our conscious awareness of these signals (Ceunen et al., 2016). Interoception includes both non-conscious and conscious processes and plays a key role in motivating behavior, including dietary intake (Paulus & Steward, 2014).

A central pathway in this body–brain communication is the vagus nerve. This extensive network of nerve fibers connects nearly every internal organ to the base of the brain and back, regulating essential autonomic functions such as heart rate, breathing, and digestion. Recent research shows that vagal fibers extend beyond the brainstem into broader brain networks that interpret internal bodily changes, anticipate physiological needs, and coordinate appropriate responses. These networks are also involved in higher-order cognitive processes, including memory, emotional processing, and the construction of self-identity (Underwood, 2021).

Because the vagus nerve influences both basic autonomic regulation and complex cognitive systems, it has become a target for clinical intervention. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), which delivers electrical pulses to the nerve, is already approved for the treatment of depression and epilepsy. Less invasive stimulation approaches are being investigated for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, and Alzheimer’s disease. However, VNS can produce varied side effects, highlighting its limitations (Underwood, 2021).

Non-invasive methods can also enhance vagal tone and interoceptive awareness. Mindfulness practices, including meditation, breathing exercises, and body scans, have been shown to stimulate the vagus nerve and activate the insula, a brain region considered central to interoceptive processing (Craig, 2009; Paciorek & Skora, 2020).

Nutrition is another critical pathway influencing vagal function. The gut–brain axis enables communication between gut microbiota and the brain (Breit, 2018). Gut microbes contribute to immune regulation and inflammation control by influencing what enters and exits the body (Rooks & Garrett, 2016). A Western-style diet high in sugar and fat promotes systemic inflammation (Myles, 2014), potentially disrupting gut and vagal health. In contrast, cultivating healthy gut bacteria through high-quality, nutritious food may strengthen vagal tone and enhance interoceptive awareness.

Together, these findings suggest that interoception and vagal function are central mechanisms in the diet–mental health relationship. By supporting gut health and vagal tone through nutrition and mindfulness practices, individuals may improve emotional regulation, cognitive functioning, and overall mental well-being.
