World Fair Play Day (19th May 2026) — Essence of Athletics Impacts Fairness in International Relations & Individual Lives

For the sake of existence to competitive sports with explicit norms evolved over thousands of years.

The spirit of any sport with particular guidelines can be applied as directives by political leaders and citizens in their every-day-life.

Thus, the United Nations Organization declared 19th May as ‘World Fair Play Day’ inspired by the essence of athletics, can impact fairness in international relations & individual lives.

“On 1 July 2024 the General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/78/310, proclaiming May 19 as World Fair Play Day.

Recognizing the spirit of fair play and the values it embodies in both sports and everyday life.

The resolution emphasizes the role of sports, in fostering peace, development, community cohesion, etc.”

Sports competition imparts values of –

 Dedication and practice that levels up to excellence.

 Even after all preparation teams or individuals make up their mind that, winning and losing are part of the game.

 Players play abide by certain rules and regulations.

In international relations, some regions and countries are way ahead than others. But the principle of fair play from athletics need to be followed by all countries based on the International Law. Absence of fair play is prominent in Gaza, Eurasia and current armed conflict in Iran.

Likewise, absence of civic sense and fair play makes people to be racist, biased by gender, age, region, language etc, forgetting wisdom of individual is in fair play not in foxy or aggressive mannerism.

While athletics is the best example of ‘fair play’ sometimes savage character of humans ruin professionalism and ethics of sports too. For instance, sledging in games like cricket or any sports is ruining integrity.

The purpose of the ‘World Fair Play Day’ is to understand the objective, introspect and apply ‘Fair Play’, level up lives individually and internationally.
