Daily Routine: Why Having One Changed My Life
There’s just something about coming home from vacation that always puts me at a standstill.

I look forward to sleeping in my own bed, taking a shower in my own bathroom, hugging my kids, and getting back to the comfort of home. But every single time, I forget that I need at least one full day to recover before jumping right back into my normal routine. Vacation is relaxing, but returning to reality takes a little adjustment.
My mornings begin early. My twins used to wake up around 4:30 or 5:00 a.m., but thankfully we’ve worked our way up to 6:00 a.m. Before I can even finish using the restroom, one little voice is saying, “Mommy, wake up!” while the other is telling me, “Mommy, go to sleep!” It’s funny, exhausting, and somehow the perfect way to start my day.
They are now busy three-year-old boys with endless energy who constantly pull me in different directions and challenge me physically, emotionally, and mentally. Raising four children isn’t easy, and I’ve learned that without routines, our home can quickly become chaotic.
More importantly, I don’t want to simply survive motherhood. I don’t want to run on empty every day just to get through it. I want to truly live, enjoy my children, and be the healthiest version of myself for them.
What My Typical Day Looks Like
- Wake up and get my twins ready for daycare.
- Drop them off.
- Go for my morning run, followed by a workout at my home gym or Orangetheory.
- Eat a healthy, balanced breakfast.
- Start my workday from home.
- Take my daughter to summer camp.
- Continue working or run errands.
- Pick my daughter up from camp.
- Decide what’s for dinner.
- Listen to a podcast or call my mom while driving.
- Pick up the twins from daycare.
- Meal prep and let the kids play outside for about an hour.
- Cook dinner.
- Take a shower.
- Spend some quality time watching TV or doing an activity together.
- Give the kids their baths and get everyone ready for bed.
It all sounds pretty simple when it’s written out like this, but trust me — there are potty-training accidents, sibling disagreements, last-minute tantrums, forgotten snacks, and countless interruptions sprinkled throughout the day. Motherhood is beautifully unpredictable.
Even with a busy schedule, I make time for myself because I know I can’t pour from an empty cup.
Self-care for me might look like getting my nails done, sitting alone in a coffee shop with a good book, going to dinner with my husband or a friend, or taking a peaceful jog through the park. Those moments help me recharge so I can show up as the mom, wife, and woman I want to be.
Recently, I joined a running club and have been training for my first 5K. After the race, DJ Diplo will perform, making theevent even more exciting. I’ll actually be attending by myself, but I joined a women’s running group and will be meeting them for the first time there. I’m nervous, excited, and proud of myself for stepping outside my comfort zone.
Why Routines Are So Important Today
In today’s world, life moves incredibly fast. Between work, parenting, school activities, social media, appointments, and the constant pressure to always be doing something, it’s easy to become overwhelmed.
That’s why routines matter.
Routines provide structure when life feels chaotic. They reduce decision fatigue because you already know what comes next. They help create healthy habits, improve productivity, reduce stress, and give children a sense of security and stability.
For parents especially, routines also create space for something we often forget about — ourselves. Whether it’s a morning workout, a quiet cup of coffee, reading a book, or simply taking a few deep breaths before the day begins, those small moments make a huge difference.
I’ve realized that having a routine isn’t about having every minute perfectly planned. It’s about creating rhythms that help you stay grounded when life gets messy.
Some days, everything goes according to plan. Other days, nothing does.
And that’s okay.
The goal isn’t perfection — it’s consistency.
Because at the end of the day, my routine isn’t just a schedule. It’s the foundation that helps me take care of my family while remembering to take care of myself too.
