How powerful is Data Modelling?

𝗜𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵.

I was looking through a beginner’s Power BI assignment, and her line chart just wasn’t behaving. At first glance, everything looked perfect: clean tables, proper relationships, everything connected the way it should be. But the visual still wasn’t showing what it was supposed to.

So I slowed down, opened the model again, and did something extremely basic:

I deleted the relationship between the fact table and the affected dimension table… I recreated it from scratch… and refreshed the report.

Boom. The line chart corrected itself instantly.

That moment reminded me of something important:

The problem wasn’t the visual. It wasn’t even that she didn’t create the relationship. It was that she didn’t understand the structure behind it, and sometimes Power BI doesn’t interpret relationships the way we assume it will.

It also took me back to my early days. When I started my data journey, I used to make one mistake. I rushed into visuals without truly understanding my model. I thought “connecting tables” was enough.

But here’s the thing: after cleaning your data, modelling is the foundation. It’s not just about creating relationships; it’s about understanding how your data thinks, moves, and interacts.

Data modelling is the step that makes everything else work. Before visuals. Before DAX. Before formatting. If the structure is weak, the whole dashboard will show it.

If you’re starting your data journey, don’t just build models; take time to understand them. Clean your data first, then model it thoughtfully. A solid model won’t just make your dashboard work; it will make your insights accurate and meaningful.
