You Don’t Have to Memorize Tarot Card or Oracle Card Meanings to Read Intuitively
What I have learned from more than 40 years of working with Tarot, Oracle cards and intuition.
Have you ever looked at a Tarot or Oracle card and immediately thought of someone?

Perhaps a person in the image reminded you of somebody you know. Maybe a color brought back a memory, or a symbol suddenly made you think of a situation you had been through.
That first impression may be more important than you realize.
When people ask me how to read Tarot or Oracle cards, they often say, “But I don’t know all the meanings.”
My answer is always the same: you do not need to memorize every card meaning before you begin.
The guidebook is there to help, but it is not there to replace your intuition.
I am Anne-Marie McCormack, an award-winning author, psychic medium and creator of the 6th Sense Connection Oracle Cards. I have been working with spiritual guidance, psychic development and intuitive card reading for more than 40 years.
Over that time, I have learned that cards are not simply pictures with fixed meanings. They are a way of opening a conversation with your own inner awareness.
Start by Looking at the Card
When you choose a card, try not to open the guidebook immediately.
Take a moment to look at the picture.
What do you notice first?
Is it the color, a person, an animal, a symbol or something in the background? Does the card make you feel calm, excited, uncomfortable or hopeful?
Does it remind you of someone?
This is the part many beginners overlook. They assume they must find the “correct” meaning, when the card may already be showing them something personal.
I often tell people to treat the card like a mirror. It may reflect something you already know deep down but have not consciously acknowledged.
The Guidebook Is a Starting Point
The author of every Tarot or Oracle deck has written meanings to help you understand the cards. Those meanings are valuable, especially when you are learning.
However, as you work with the cards, you will discover that some cards develop personal meanings for you.
This is what I encourage you to try.
Stare at the card for a while. Let your mind settle. Notice whatever comes to you, even if it seems unrelated at first.
A card may remind you of:
- A person you know
- A conversation you had
- A place you have visited
- A past experience
- An emotion you have been avoiding
- A situation that is currently unfolding
That sudden association may be your intuition guiding you towards the message.
For example, the Free Spirit card in my 6th Sense Connection Oracle Cards always reminds me of my spiritual daughter, Teketa.
She loves crystals, reads Tarot intuitively and marches to the beat of her own drum. When I see that card, I immediately think of her independent nature, her creativity and the way she follows her own path.
My Hermit card reminds me of my psychic-medium sis-star, Trish. She meditates deeply, spends time going within and understands the value of silence and reflection.
Those meanings are personal to me. They may not be the first things another reader sees in those cards — and that is perfectly fine.
The guidebook gives you the foundation. Your own intuition and life experiences bring the card to life.
Try This Simple Exercise

Choose one Tarot or Oracle card and place it in front of you.
Take three slow breaths and ask:
What do I need to know today?
Now look at the card without trying to force an answer.
Write down the first three words, feelings or images that come to mind.
Do not judge them. Do not decide whether they sound logical or spiritual enough. Simply write them down.
Only after doing this should, you read the guidebook.
Then ask yourself:
How does the traditional meaning connect with what I noticed?
Sometimes the guidebook will confirm exactly what you felt. Sometimes it will add another layer. Occasionally, your personal response may seem completely different.
That does not necessarily mean you have read the card incorrectly. It may be speaking directly to your current circumstances.
How I Begin an Intuitive Reading
When I am reading for myself or somebody else, I like to begin by creating a quiet space.
This does not need to be complicated. You do not need candles, crystals or an elaborate ritual unless those things help you feel comfortable.
I take a few breaths and set the intention that the reading should be helpful, honest and grounded.
Then I ask a clear question.
Open questions usually work better than questions that can only be answered with yes or no.
Instead of asking:
Will I get the job?
You might ask:
What do I need to understand about my career at this time?
Other useful questions include:
- What should I know about this situation?
- What is influencing this relationship?
- What may help me move forward?
- What lesson is this experience showing me?
- Where should I focus my attention now?
Once the question is clear, I shuffle the cards and choose one.
There is no single correct way to select a card. You can take the top card, spread the cards across a table or choose the one that naturally draws your attention.
The important thing is to notice your first response.
Tarot and Oracle Cards Are Different

Tarot cards usually follow a structured system of symbols and archetypes. The cards are connected through a larger system, which gives readers a framework to work with.
Oracle cards are more flexible. Every Oracle deck has its own artwork, themes and messages.
Some Oracle cards contain a single word. Others include longer messages, symbols or detailed images.
Neither is better than the other. It depends on what you feel drawn to and how you prefer to work.
Tarot may help you explore the structure of a situation, while Oracle cards may offer encouragement, emotional insight or a spiritual message.
You can also use both together.
For example, you might draw one Tarot card to explore what is happening and one Oracle card to ask what may help you respond.
Read them separately first. Then look at how their messages connect.
Do not force them to agree. Sometimes the difference between the two cards is the most important part of the reading.
How Intuition May Feel
People sometimes expect intuition to arrive as a dramatic psychic experience.
It can, but it often does not.
Intuition may feel like:
- A quiet sense that a card matters
- A word that suddenly appears in your mind
- A memory that surfaces
- A physical sensation
- An emotional reaction to the image
- A feeling of recognition
- A calm inner knowing
The key is to notice these responses without forcing them.
The louder voice is not always the intuitive one. Overthinking can be intense, anxious and demanding. Intuition is often quieter and more immediate.
With practice, you begin to recognize the difference.
A Four-Card Reading You Can Try
If you would like to explore a situation in more depth, try this simple four-card spread.
Card One: Where am I now?
Ask:
What do I need to understand about my present situation?
Look at the card before reading the guidebook. What stands out? Does it reflect how you are feeling?
Card Two: What is influencing me?
Ask:
What is affecting my thoughts, feelings or choices?
This may reveal an outside influence, an old belief, a fear, a hope or a pattern you have repeated before.
Card Three: What do I need to know?
Ask:
What message would be helpful for me to hear right now?
Write down your first impressions before checking the card meaning.
The message may be reassuring, challenging or unexpected. The most useful card is not always the one that tells you what you hoped to hear.
Card Four: What is my next step?
Ask:
What can I do to move forward with greater clarity?
Your next step might involve having an honest conversation, setting a boundary, resting, asking for help or finally beginning something you have delayed.
Once you have considered all four cards, look at the spread as a whole.
Ask yourself:
- Is there a repeated color or symbol?
- Does one card clarify another?
- Is the same emotion appearing more than once?
- Are the cards encouraging action, patience, honesty or release?
- What is the clearest practical message?
Then write a short summary in your own words.
For example:
I am feeling uncertain because I am trying to please everyone. The cards are reminding me to listen to my own needs, communicate honestly and take one practical step instead of trying to solve everything at once.
That summary is the heart of the reading.
Keep a Card Journal
One of the best ways to develop your intuition is to keep a journal.
Write down:
- The date
- Your question
- The card you chose
- Your first impressions
- The traditional meaning
- The message you received
- Any action you plan to take
Return to your notes later.
You may notice that a card keeps appearing during a particular period of your life. You may also discover that the same card means something different depending on the question you ask.
That is not a problem. It is part of developing your relationship with the cards.
You are not trying to become a machine that repeats fixed definitions. You are learning to listen, observe and interpret.
Use the Cards as Guidance, Not Control
I do not believe Tarot or Oracle cards should take away your personal power.
They can help you reflect on your choices, recognize patterns and consider possibilities, but you remain responsible for your decisions.
A card reading should not make you feel frightened or powerless. It should help you understand yourself and your circumstances more clearly.
Use the cards as a tool for reflection and spiritual guidance. Take what feels helpful, think carefully about the message and use your own judgement.
Cards should not replace qualified medical, legal, financial or mental-health advice.
Begin with One Card
You do not need a collection of expensive decks or years of experience to begin.
Start with one card, one question and a few quiet minutes.
Look at the image.
Notice what you feel.
Write down what comes to mind before checking the guidebook.
Then ask yourself how the traditional meaning and your personal impression work together.
Over time, you will begin to recognize your own intuitive language.
You may find that certain colors speak to you. You may connect particular cards with people in your life. You may notice that your body reacts to certain images before your mind understands why.
That is how your confidence grows.
The guidebook can teach you the traditional meanings, but your own intuition gives the cards a personal voice.

Most importantly, do not worry about reading exactly like anyone else.
Let the guidebook give you a starting point. Let the images speak to you. And allow your own experiences to shape the way you understand the cards.
Your intuition may know more than you think.
