What Ted Turner Meant to Modern Media: A Look Back at His Life and Career

It was confirmed on May 6, 2026, that one of the greatest media minds in history had passed away.

Ted Turner, a former Atlanta Braves owner and mogul, was pronounced dead at the age of 86. A man who needed no introduction at all captivated television like no other.

According to ESPN, Turner purchased the Atlanta Braves in January 1976 after a disappointing campaign that saw the organization finish with a record of 67–94. However, Turner played a major role in the Braves’ 1995 World Series championship season.

He also brought a majority role with the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks in 1977 and kept the team in the city after there were rumors of them leaving. During his time with the team, he made the postseason 15 times during his ownership. Hawks principal owner Tony Ressler said this in a statement to ESPN:

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Ted Turner– a true original, a visionary, and a force of nature whose impact will be felt for generations. For me personally, owning the Atlanta Hawks and following in his footsteps–even a small way– has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”

On X, the Braves made it clear in a statement of the impact he made and the legacy he left behind:

“Our good friend and former owner, Ted Turner, was one of a kind — a brilliant businessman, consummate showman and passionate fan of his beloved Braves. Ted’s visionary leadership and innovative approach to broadcast television transformed the Braves into ‘America’s Team. We will miss you, Ted. You helped make us who we are today, and the Atlanta Braves are forever grateful for the impact you made on our organization and in our community.”

Turner went beyond just sports. Nicknamed the “Mouth of the South”, he launched Cable Network News (CNN), which was the world’s first 24-hour news channel. He also took over a family business and renamed it Turner Communications Group in 1970.

Continuing his entertainment empire, Turner also founded Turner Broadcasting System, which later turned into TNT. But he also developed the Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies.

While he was in the media business, he was also a part of professional wrestling.

Turner played a large role in the Monday Night Wars during the mid to late 1990s. He rebranded Jim Crockett Promotions and turned it into World Championship Wrestling (WCW), rivaling them against chairman Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

CEO of CNN Worldwide, Mark Thompson, had this to say from the official website of CNN:

“Ted was an intensely involved and committed leader, intrepid, fearless and always willing to back a hunch and trust his own judgement. He was and always will be the presiding spirit of CNN. Ted is the giant on whose shoulders we stand, and we will all take a moment today and recognize him and his impact on our lives and the world.”

Ted Turner was one of the great television minds in entertainment history, and like many of his peers have witnessed and seen his legacy will continue to move on in the hearts of those who effortlessly and relentlessly chase the career that he had that changed the world.
