Author’s Note: In my work with nutrition and health, one sentence comes up again and again: “I followed the plan properly, but it still didn’t work for me.”
And honestly, this is where many people start blaming themselves. They think they failed because they did not have enough discipline, enough willpower, or enough control. But in many cases, the real problem is not the person. The problem is the plan.
Most generic diet programs are built around averages. They use general calculations for calories, protein, carbohydrates, fats, and meal timing. These numbers may work for some people, but they do not always reflect what is happening inside your body, your lifestyle, your stress levels, your sleep pattern, your hormones, your gut health, or your long-term habits.
That is why clinical personalisation matters.
The Myth of the “Average” Human
Dietary guidelines and population-level nutrition advice are important. They help guide public health, support healthier food choices, and reduce the risk of diet-related disease across large groups of people. But there is a big difference between public health guidance and a personalised nutrition plan.
A guideline may tell us what works for many people. A personalised plan asks a deeper question: What will work for this person, in this body, in this life?

A high-carbohydrate plan based on whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fibre is very different from a high-carbohydrate pattern built around refined foods and frequent sugar spikes.
This is why clinical personalisation does not simply ask, “Is this diet good or bad?” It asks, “Is this diet suitable for this person right now?”
2. The Nutrient Deficiency Trap
Many generic “clean eating” plans sound healthy, but they can unintentionally reduce important nutrients. This often happens when entire food groups are removed without a clear reason or without proper replacement.
For example, cutting dairy without replacing calcium, reducing meat without planning for iron and B12, avoiding grains without considering fibre and B vitamins, or following very low-fat diets without considering fat-soluble vitamins can create gaps over time.
In Australia, vitamin D is another important example. Sun exposure, skin tone, season, clothing, indoor work, shift work, and location can all influence vitamin D status. A person living in a southern state during winter may have very different needs compared with someone who spends more time outdoors in a sunny region.
Magnesium, iron, iodine, calcium, zinc, omega-3, vitamin D, and B12 are not just “small details.” They can influence energy, mood, muscle function, immunity, skin, hair, nails, thyroid health, and overall wellbeing.
This is why personalised nutrition is not only about calories. It is also about micronutrient needs, food quality, and long-term nourishment.
The Danger of “Protocol-First” Thinking
Many popular diets are protocol-first. Keto, carnivore, veganism, intermittent fasting, low-carb, low-fat, detox diets, and strict meal plans often come with fixed rules. They expect the human to adapt to the diet.
Clinical personalisation is different.
Clinical personalisation is human-first. It asks the diet to adapt to the human.
That means your plan should consider your health goals, medical history, blood markers where available, food preferences, digestion, appetite, culture, cooking skills, work schedule, budget, family meals, emotional eating patterns, and lifestyle pressure.
A diet may be scientifically interesting, but if it does not fit your real life, it will not last.
Why Your Biology May Reject a Static Plan
A static plan gives the same instructions every day, even when your body and life are changing. But your body does not live in a static environment. Your hunger, cravings, energy, digestion, and motivation can shift from day to day.

Your gut microbiome plays an important role in digestion, fibre tolerance, short-chain fatty acid production, and overall gut comfort. This is one reason why a high-fibre plan may feel amazing for one person but cause bloating, discomfort, or irregular bowel habits for another, especially if fibre is increased too quickly.
This does not mean fibre is bad. Fibre is important for gut health, heart health, blood glucose control, and satiety. But the type of fibre, the amount, the speed of increase, hydration, gut sensitivity, and food combinations all matter.

When your plan respects your culture, preferences, routine, and real challenges, you do not need constant “cheat days” just to survive it.
The Bottom Line
Generic dieting is not always wrong, but it is often incomplete.
It may give you a starting point, but it cannot fully understand your metabolism, your lifestyle, your stress, your sleep, your preferences, your medical background, or your daily behaviour patterns.
You are not average. Your nutrition plan should not treat you like you are.
