Criticizing Socio-Cultural Unification of Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan without Uzbekistan

ISMAT YUDAKOV (BUKHARA, UZBEKISTAN) — In a groundbreaking academic work titled “Romanticizing Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan: A Region through the Lens of Resistive Economy”, esteemed scholar Dr. Muhammad Asim examines the intricate interplay of cultural influences within the region. As an Uzbek scholar, I, Ismat Yudakov, am enthralled by the book’s meticulous analysis of historical, culinary, architectural, musical and societal aspects, shedding light on the diverse and evolving nature of Persianate societies.

While Dr. Asim’s comprehensive study encompasses various regional aspects, including politics and international relations, it is essential to acknowledge the pivotal position of Uzbekistan within the Persianate society. The fusion of Persian and Turkic elements holds historical and cultural significance, shaping not only Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, but also Uzbekistan. Thus, it is paramount to dedicate a significant portion of the book to Uzbekistan, allowing for a deeper exploration of its unique historical contributions and experience of Persian Orientalism.

In light of this, I propose a second version of the book titled “Persianate Societies in Flux: Exploring Cultural Dynamics in Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Beyond”. This revised edition would not only acknowledge Uzbekistan’s rightful place within the narrative but also signify the potential expansion of the study to encompass other regions sharing similar cultural and historical ties.

To enrich our understanding of Uzbekistan’s significance, I suggest the inclusion of topics such as the historical interactions between Uzbekistan and neighboring countries, the country’s rich cultural heritage, its economic policies aligned with the concept of a resistive economy, the importance of regional cooperation, political dynamics, security challenges, and future prospects of the region.

By incorporating these insights, the revised edition of Dr. Asim’s book promises to unravel a more comprehensive understanding of the region’s cultural dynamics. As an Uzbekistani immersed in the study of cultural dynamics, I eagerly anticipate the broader recognition of Uzbekistan’s contributions within the framework of romanticizing the concept of a resistive economy.
