How to Sell with the Goal Framing Effect
People hate losing more than they love winning — smart salespeople use that to make customers act faster. Here’s how.
How to Sell with the Goal Framing Effect
Framing describes how the same message, phrased in two different ways, can lead to different reactions. How something is said often matters more than what is said.
The Goal Framing Effect specifically contrasts highlighting the positive consequences of doing something with emphasizing the negative consequences of not doing it.
- Positive frame: “By updating your software, your data will stay safe.”
- Negative frame: “If you don’t update your software, your data will be at risk.”
The information is the same — but the emotional impact isn’t. Because people are loss-averse, they react more strongly to the potential of losing something than to the promise of gaining it.
Application in Sales
In sales, goal framing can significantly boost the urgency to act. Highlighting what’s at stake if the customer doesn’t act often drives faster decisions than focusing only on the benefits of acting.
For example:
- Instead of “Our tool helps teams work more efficiently,” try “Without our tool, teams waste hours on repetitive tasks.”
- Instead of “You’ll gain peace of mind with our solution,” say “Without it, you’re leaving key processes vulnerable.”
Of course, this only works if the “loss” feels real and relevant. The effect becomes much stronger after you’ve identified a problem or need the customer genuinely cares about and have made a clear case that your solution addresses it. Once the problem feels personal and the solution credible, negative framing lands with much greater impact.
