Jane worked as the Keeper of Unasked Questions, a profession that existed nowhere on official maps and yet kept her occupied every night. People came to her carrying questions they had never dared to speak: whether a vanished friendship could still be mourned, whether forgiveness counted if it arrived too late, whether a life chosen reluctantly could someday become beloved.

Jane never answered them. Her duty was stranger. She listened until each question revealed the smaller question hidden inside it. Then she placed that secret question in the Archive of Almost-Said Things, where it would remain until its owner was ready to hear it.

One evening, a woman arrived without an appointment. She sat before Jane for nearly an hour and said nothing. Jane waited. Silence was not unusual in her work; sometimes silence was simply a question that had forgotten its grammar.

At last, the woman whispered, “How do I know whether I miss someone, or only the person I was when they loved me?”

Jane felt the room become impossibly still.

For years she had catalogued other people’s uncertainties while protecting one of her own. Somewhere in the archive was a question she had written long ago and hidden beneath thousands of others. She had convinced herself that professional distance made it irrelevant.

That night, after the woman left, Jane unlocked the oldest cabinet.

Her question was waiting exactly where she had abandoned it:

“If nobody remembers the person I used to be, am I still allowed to miss her?”

Jane did not file it again.

She carried the paper home and placed it beside her bed. She understood, finally, that unanswered questions were not failures of courage. Some were rooms we entered slowly, after becoming strong enough to remain inside them.

Before sleeping, Jane read her question once more.

This time, she did not search for an answer.

She simply allowed herself to be the person asking.

My Name is Jane.
