We Text Because We Have To. Not Because We Want To.
Everyone has an opinion about why Gen Z doesn’t answer the phone. We’re anxious. We’re antisocial. We don’t know how to have a real conversation. Or as many parents say, we shouldn’t have phones in the first place. The hot take basically writes itself.
But here’s what those takes keep missing: we didn’t choose texting over calling because we’re broken. We chose it because it actually works better for the way our lives run.
A survey by Uswitch found that nearly 70% of people aged 18 to 34 prefer a text over a phone call, and a quarter of that group never picks up the phone at all (Outlook India, 2024). That sounds alarming until you think about what a phone call actually demands. It requires both people to be free at the same time, in a quiet enough space, mentally ready to perform a conversation in real time with no edits and no pause button. A text asks for none of that.
There is also something nobody talks about enough: texting gives you time to actually say what you mean. Anyone who has ever hung up a phone call and immediately thought of the thing they actually wanted to say knows exactly what this is about. Texting removes that problem. You can think, reread, and respond without the pressure of dead air.
That said, it is not a perfect system. Researchers have pointed out that continued reliance on non-verbal communication can quietly erode the closeness that real voice conversations create (Boston Brand Media, 2024). A text can carry information. It cannot always carry tone, urgency, or the feeling that someone actually showed up for you.

So no, Gen Z did not kill the phone call out of laziness. We just built communication habits that fit a world that never really stops moving. Whether that is progress or loss probably depends on the last time a phone call made you feel like someone genuinely cared.
Do you think texting brings us closer or just makes it easier to keep people at arm’s length? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
