No pin chat option on iPhone?

A few days ago, I noticed something in WhatsApp.
I was comparing the Android and iPhone experiences and found what looked like a missing feature.
My immediate thought was:
“Interesting. Why would WhatsApp remove this on iPhone?”I took screenshots. Started analyzing.Even began preparing a LinkedIn post about it.
Then I did one thing I should have done first: I checked my assumption.
Turns out, I wasn’t looking at a missing feature. I was looking at a different interaction pattern. Same outcome. Different way of getting there.
And honestly, that felt like a good reminder.
As designers, we’re trained to spot patterns, inconsistencies, and opportunities. But sometimes we become so focused on the observation that we forget to validate it. A screenshot isn’t always the full story. A missing button doesn’t always mean a missing feature. And different interactions don’t necessarily mean different capabilities.
The interesting part wasn’t WhatsApp. It was realizing how easy it is to build an entire narrative around an assumption.
Now I’m curious:
What’s a design assumption you’ve made that turned out to be completely wrong after digging deeper?
