The 5-Fruit Rule: Why I’m Still Chasing Shooting Stars

On the night of April 21–22, something special is happening in the sky.

Shooting stars.

Not just a solitary streak, but a dedicated celestial display. If you can remember being a child, you’ve likely done this before: you see a sudden flash of light, and someone whispers, “Quickly, make a wish.”

And you did it. No questions, no logic — just pure belief.

In my home, my grandmother had her own version of the tradition. She used to say, “Quickly name five fruits before the light fades, and your wish will come true.” I never understood the connection between fruit and the cosmos, but to this day, whenever I see a streak of light, I find myself whispering, “Apple, Mango, Banana…”

What’s happening on April 21–22? We are entering the peak of the Lyrids, one of the oldest recorded meteor showers.

As Earth passes through the trail of a comet, small space particles enter our atmosphere at incredible speeds and burn up. That friction is what creates the “shooting stars” we see from below.

During the peak, you can expect to see anywhere from 15 to 40 meteors per hour. Because the moon will be a thin crescent that night, the sky will be exceptionally dark — perfect for spotting even the faintest streaks.

— -

Where should you look? This is where most people miss the show. They walk outside, look up randomly for two minutes, see nothing, and go back to their screens.

Meteors in a shower appear to “radiate” from a specific point in the sky. For this event, that point is near the constellation Lyra. If you know where Lyra is, you’ll know exactly where to focus your attention.

Finding the spot (The easy way) Let’s be honest: the sky is massive, and most of us aren’t trained astronomers. Not everyone knows how to spot a specific constellation in a sea of stars.

That’s exactly why I built Skymap: Constellation Finder.

I wanted to create something that removed the guesswork. You don’t need to study a map or know your coordinates. You simply:

  1. Open the app.
  2. Point your phone at the sky.
  3. See the constellations labeled in real-time.

The app works in 15 different languages, making it accessible to stargazers all over the world. For the night of the 21st, you can use it to find Lyra in seconds, ensuring you’re looking in the right direction when a meteor strikes.

How to make the most of the night You don’t need fancy telescopes or expensive gear. You just need a little bit of patience.

  1. Find some darkness: Get away from bright city lights if you can.
  2. Let your eyes adjust: It takes about 15–20 minutes for your “night vision” to fully kick in. Put your phone away during this time.
  3. Get comfortable: Bring a chair or a blanket. The best way to see the show is to lie back and look up.

— -

A small suggestion Don’t treat this like another “content moment” for your social media. Don’t worry about getting the perfect photo.

Just step outside. Feel the cool air. Look up at the vastness above us and realize that those streaks of light have been traveling through space for millions of years just to end their journey in our sky.

If you see even one shooting star, it’s worth it.

April 21–22. Mark your calendar. You might just find yourself making a wish again.
