PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

The Events Of A Tropical Week

Tropical, That Is, For My Corner Of The World

I met with my siblings online. Us Northern-hemisphere inhabitants exclaimed over our high temperatures and long days, swapping tales of how we were keeping cool. Our Australian-based brother, heading into the depths of winter, related the cold weather strategies he and his family had deployed.

Then we talked numbers. We were all talking about an identical temperature range; our tropical weather is his chilly winter day. Such is the power of habit and expectation.

Perhaps taking advantage of the blue skies, someone above us was having fun at the start of the week. We have no idea why.

Looking at the photos, they could almost have been taken looking down into water at a group of aquatic creatures going mad. However, it was all happening up in the sky.

I hope (for the sake of the passengers) that no commercial flights were involved. It would have been a bumpy ride.

We might curse the ivy when it climbs through the bathroom window and messes with the plumbing, but we’re grateful for the shade it provides in this weather.

I take the Caped Crusader out while her pack leaders are at work and school. She surprised me one day by emerging labelled.

It proved to be a CE mark revealing her preference for lying on the cool floor amongst the 6-year-old’s toys, as well as confirming her conformity with European health, safety, and environmental protection standards. A note at the bottom declared her to be safe with children.

I dispute the latter. We once caught a visiting toddler tucking into her food, having elbowed her aside. The Caped Crusader stood back, looking dismayed.

The Caped Crusader is not safe with children.

Children, however, are 100% safe with the Caped Crusader. She won’t attack anyone over anything, not even a food thief.

It was a week for spending time in the garden, but without doing anything more strenuous than taking photos of our own shadows.

… and doesn’t look as though it will produce many figs this year. We counted only half a dozen.

In the sky above the fig tree, you can see a commercial jet taking a sensible route through the sky, unlike the pilots’ playtime earlier in the week.

We are not the only ones taking advantage of the sun. The dinosaurs potter about foraging, sunbathing, and taking dust baths. By mid afternoon, when the heat is blistering, they take themselves back to their run and settle in the shade.

To round off the week, the 6-year-old made fairy cakes and delivered ours with strict instructions as to which of us had been allotted which colour. I can’t remember which was which. I think we shared once her back was turned.

I’m not sure about nutritional content with those colours, but we don’t mind an occasional sugarfest, and we had to eat them quickly before they melted in the sun.

The week in photos articles were started by Dennett and taken up by many. They provide some fascinating insights into people’s lives. As well as Dennett, here are more writers whose stories are worth following: Susan Alison, Anne Bonfert, Kim Zuch, Ellie Jacobson, pockett dessert, Erika Burkhalter, Barb Dalton 🇺🇦, Pene Hodge, K. Barrett, Mia Verita, Louise Peacock.
