APPLE LEMMINGS

Are the Apple Haters Right About Apple Lemmings?

Some are lemmings

I worked at an Apple Store for almost 5 years. A LOT of customers I waited on honestly would be better off with a dumb phone — they were people who don’t do much more than use it for calls and texts and barely understand that much. Many did not use passcodes, didn’t know their Apple ID; really knew nothing.

They neither knew nor cared about security, ad tracking, location tracking, or password managers. They were Apple customers, but not for any of those reasons.

That’s not a condemnation. These are not necessarily unintelligent people. They simply do not care about these things. That may seem astounding to you, but consider that quite a few people ignore their health, their weight, their food choices. I think that is much worse than not caring about tech, but people have different priorities.

The Apple haters are correct that these people are lemmings following the herd. It’s part keeping up with the Jones and part that their more technically aware friends have Apple phones, computers, iPads. They seem not to have any other reason to choose Apple.

But some of us are very aware of why we choose Apple. We aren’t lemmings, we are informed consumers. We don’t allow random apps or ads to track our location. We use tough passwords and multi-factor authentication or passkeys where we can. We often own iPads, Macs, and other Apple gear, and we appreciate the workflow convenience the Apple ecosystem offers. We choose Apple because its advantages matter to us.

Are we the majority? I don’t know, but probably not. So, yes, the Apple haters may have a point, but I’d suspect that Google and Samsung users have their own share of lemmings.

Aren’t most humans lemmings to some degree? Religion, sports, tech choices — aren’t those all often unthinking following?

Are you a lemming in any respect?
