Essential Skills of a Speech Language Pathologist

As the field of speech-language pathology evolves, so do the essential skills of an SLP. While some core abilities remain constant, new abilities have emerged to better serve individuals’ unique needs. As an aspiring future SLP, I hope to raise awareness of the profession and make a meaningful impact.

Culture sensitivity and inclusivity

Over the past several decades, linguistic, ethnic, and cultural identities have been changing progressively in our country. Because of this progression, we need to make sure that we keep up to date on these specific identities in order to successfully help individuals with their select reason of needing an SLP.

Some examples that may pertain to specific situations include:

• Working with clients whose native language is different
• Differences in dialect
• Families with varied beliefs (religion, culture, health, etc.)
• Clients whose native area has different definitions of communication disorders

Typically, it would be extremely helpful for the client to have an SLP of the same cultural/ethnic background with similar dialects and such, but unfortunately that is not the case. In order to serve these individuals by their respected differences, SLP’s must familiarize themselves with those differences. If they don’t, they ethically cannot provide their client services.

A great SLP never imposes but adapts, ensuring therapy is respectful, inclusive, and effective for everyone.

Behaviors and Mindset

Having a specific mindset and behaviors can go a long way for your clients. Many patients often need to have an SLP for a long time, so initially they may not be so motivated or upbeat. With the help of a positive and encouraging mindset, not only does it affect their overall mood of each visit, but it can help with their progression in their specified areas of needs.

Some ways in which you can provide a positive mindset and behaviors for your patients include:

• Positive Praise (for adults something like behavior-based statements, and for children clapping, cheering, high fives, etc.)
• Display of enthusiasm and positive outlook
• Provide a safe space
• Compassion and empathy
• Patience
• Show a passion and motivation about your area of work

A lot of these attributes of a person may come naturally to those who truly enjoy their profession and their motive to make a positive difference to those in need. There may be some days that are often challenging for the patient as well as the SLP, but with hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude, you can accomplish so much.

Ability to Diversify

What I mean by being able to diversify is to be able to think outside of the box when it comes to every client. When it comes to different age groups, gender, and interests, certain individuals may not want to do the same exercise as the previous client. In order to do this, you need to have a creative mind and be prepared to make your exercises and treatments accordingly to your specific audience.

Keeping your client engaged and motivated is a huge priority of an SLP. One way you can do this is by using your creative mind, which is a huge skill of an SLP. Always make sure that your exercises and treatments align with your client’s interests. If it doesn’t go according to plan, switch to a new technique!

An important aspect of your job as an SLP is to be a coach and motivator, and the best way to motivate your patients is by keeping things interesting.

In addition to being creative, you also need to be able to diversify. The way I differentiate between creativity and diversification is that with creating these activities, you also need to diversify each session. What I mean by that is you should be alternating the activities each session according to each client's interests.

Reflection

Being an SLP is a truly rewarding profession when it comes to the difference that they make for others. There are several skills that an SLP obtains to make them have more of an impact on others. With your creative, respectful, and accommodating attitudes, you may become an amazing SLP that has the ability to make an enormous difference on others’ lives.
