[Teachings I Carry as a Hesquiaht Woman] hišukʷin c̓awaak [everything is connected]

These teachings come from my Nuu chah nulth Elders, from the land, from the stories I was trusted to hear. I share them gently as a learner.

hišukʷin c̓awaak [everything is connected] All life is relationship.

ʔukłaas [name] A name carries responsibility.

ʔuʔaał [family] Family is ancestors and future generations.

ḥaaḥuupaḥ ʔuʔiiqsuʔiš [prayer begins with gratitude] Give thanks first and listen.

ʔuʔiiqsuʔiš haaakwaaʔal [cleansing and preparation] Water, cedar, prayer, humility.

ʔuʔiiqsuʔiš yaaʔal [protocols create harmony] Protocols keep balance.

ʔaʔiiḥ tašiił [the land is alive] The land is a relative.

Ḥaaḥuupiił [learning through relationship] Knowledge comes through Elders and community.

ʔuʔiiqsuʔiš ʔuʔaał ʔuʔiiqsuʔiš [speaking with responsibility] Words carry power.
