Creating a Food Hub for UGA students using Swift UI

Project Overview:

Continuing with my work from regular web dev, I wanted to explore food around Athens and make something related to that. I created a sample of what could really be a cool app. Using lists, modals, and apple integrated Mapkit, I created a database of restaurants around Athens that are shown on a map when you click them from a list.

The Problem

Yelp, google reviews, and TripAdvisor are all terrible at actually giving you good information about restaurants from people you trust. It usually is just trying to serve you ads, some of them make you log in, and some of them are fake AI reviews that are inaccurate, and can be bad for business. The other side of this problem coin is that UGA students don’t know about the best restaurants in Athens, especially if they are located farther out from campus.

The Solution

My app would show food reviews for UGA students by UGA students and show where they are on a map. In theory, you could sort by distance, rating, food type, etc. My app shows some of this but that puts the problem more in context. So UGA students and faculty would have better information about restaurants in Athens and local businesses would get more traffic from students going to different parts of Athens.

Results

For a starter, it turned out well. I was able to create 8–10 sample restaurants and show how the core features of the app would function. I struggled with the map aspect and properly storing my data in the right arrays, I started out wrong with that one and it made the work harder towards the end. Going forward I would want to add users and make a review submission page.

CSS/JS Animation Practice with Packers DVD Loading Screen

Project Overview:

After learning a bit about CSS and Javascript animation through an individual concentration study for our final project, I used that by attempting to build a favorite “loading screen” as a kid with a twist. Using the Packers logo and color scheme I built a page that has a logo bouncing around the screen like the DVD pause screen of the early 2000s. However, My website will tell you when the logo hits the corner.

The Problem

While this project is more for fun and nostalgia, a problem, while not the most serious, can still be identified. As a kid, you remember arguing with friends saying I saw the DVD logo touch the corner but you would all never see it happen together. On a more macro scale, the real problem is being able to use Javascript in web development to create animations, especially responsive ones. This is useful for many things from small shopping animations that help increase customer retention to video game animation.

The Solution

My website uses JavaScript to show responsive animation. A speed slider and wall hit counter show how the webpage is responsive to the animations occurring on screen. Along with those two attributes I solve the ‘unserious’ problem of knowing when the logo hits the corner with a pop-notification when those x,y coordinates are hit by the Packers logo. While simple and fun, I think this website is a good way to show responsive animation on a website.

Results

It turned out great, I had some issues with animation errors but I was able to get some help and work through those errors. I think it is fun and completes the job of showing responsive JavaScript animation. I was not able to connect it through an API unfortunately so If I was to continue this project that is what I would work on adding.
