Pathometabo: A Simple Tool to Understand Disease Mechanism

When I was studying medicine, I realized something important. Most resources give you facts, but they don’t always help you understand how everything connects. We learn about a disease in pieces: what goes wrong, what symptoms appear, what tests are done, and what treatments are used, but it’s often hard to see the whole picture in one place. That’s why I built Pathometabo, a small web tool that summarizes diseases in a mechanism-based format so you can understand the “why” behind everything.

The idea came from a common struggle among medical students: memorizing information without truly understanding it. I noticed that when you understand the mechanism of a disease, everything becomes easier. You don’t just remember the symptoms; you understand why they happen. You don’t just memorize the tests; you understand why those tests are ordered. And you don’t just list the medicines; you understand how they work. Pathometabo is designed to help with exactly that. It provides a structured way to review diseases, focusing on the primary defect, affected pathway, metabolic consequences, diagnostic tests, medicines, and prevention. This structure helps students build a strong conceptual foundation, which is more valuable than memorizing random facts.

PathoMetabo

The tool itself is very simple. Each disease is stored in a small JSON file, like a mini database. When you select a disease and click “Open,” the app reads the corresponding file and fills the cards with information. This makes the tool fast and lightweight, because it doesn’t rely on heavy frameworks or complex backend systems. It is basically a clean, interactive note viewer that focuses on understanding rather than just reading.

Diseases that it covers

To show how it works, let’s discuss Type 2 Diabetes, which is one of the most common diseases students study. Type 2 Diabetes is a metabolic disorder where the body becomes resistant to insulin or the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin. As a result, blood sugar levels rise. This happens because the cells, especially in muscle and fat tissue, stop responding to insulin properly. When this happens, glucose cannot enter the cells efficiently, so it stays in the bloodstream. To compensate, the pancreas produces more insulin, but over time, the pancreas cannot keep up and insulin secretion decreases. This is why Type 2 Diabetes is often described as a disease of both insulin resistance and insulin deficiency.

Patients with Type 2 Diabetes often experience increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow wound healing. These symptoms are a direct result of high blood sugar and its effects on the body. The diagnosis is usually confirmed through tests like fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, or an oral glucose tolerance test. These tests help to measure how well the body is controlling glucose over time.

Treatment focuses on improving insulin sensitivity and controlling blood sugar levels. Metformin is commonly used because it reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity. Some medicines increase insulin secretion from the pancreas, and insulin therapy is used when the pancreas can no longer produce enough insulin. Prevention mainly involves lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, balanced diet, avoiding sugary drinks, and regular checkups. These changes can significantly reduce the risk of developing diabetes, especially in high-risk individuals.

What I like most about Pathometabo is that it brings all of this information together in one place. Instead of reading different notes or watching multiple videos, you can quickly review the disease mechanism and understand how everything fits together. The design is clean and professional, with a medical dashboard feel, making it easy to use during quick revision sessions.

I also want to make it mobile-friendly so students and patients can use it on the go.

In the end, Pathometabo is a small project with a big purpose: to make learning disease mechanisms easier and more intuitive.
