Community empowerment is a crucial effort in creating an active, productive, and harmonious environment. In this process, collaboration between universities and the community plays a strategic role in delivering programs that not only provide educational benefits but also strengthen social ties between residents. This spirit is embodied by the University of 17 August 1945 (UNTAG) Surabaya through its Community Pillar Program, implemented in Kampung Pancasila, RW 03, Gubeng Village, Gubeng District, Surabaya City. One activity that has garnered attention and enthusiasm from the community is Sinau Bareng Catur (Learning Together with Chess). This activity utilizes chess as both a learning medium and a means of social interaction for people of all ages. This choice is not without reason. Chess is a game that teaches logical thinking, strategy development, problem-solving, and sound decision-making. Furthermore, this game also creates a space for togetherness that brings residents together in a positive and enjoyable atmosphere.

The “Sinau Bareng Catur” program was born from observations of the potential of the community in RW 03, Gubeng Village, who are interested in chess, both among children and adults. However, this potential has not been widely utilized as a means of education and strengthening social ties. Through this activity, UNTAG Surabaya students strive to provide a platform that can develop the community’s thinking skills while strengthening community togetherness. The activity began with a socialization about the history of chess, the basic rules of the game, and the benefits of chess in developing strategic thinking skills. Afterward, participants participated in a fun match session, which provided an opportunity to practice the material they had learned. The culmination of the event was a chess competition divided into categories for children and adults. This series of activities provided an engaging learning experience while fostering a spirit of sportsmanship among participants. The community’s enthusiasm was evident in the high level of participation throughout the event. The presence of participants from various age groups demonstrated that chess can be a powerful medium for community unity. Participants not only learned game strategies but also built communication, shared experiences, and strengthened social relationships with fellow residents. This provides invaluable social capital in community life. Furthermore, the “Sinau Bareng Catur” activity demonstrated that community empowerment can be achieved through a simple yet impactful approach. Chess, traditionally known as a form of entertainment, can actually be an effective educational tool. Through each move and strategy played, participants learned to think more structuredly, consider various possibilities, and make wise decisions. These skills are useful not only in the game but also in everyday life.

The interactions established during the activity created a more intimate atmosphere, increased community participation, and strengthened a sense of ownership in their neighborhood. This aligns with the spirit of the Pancasila Village, which prioritizes unity, mutual cooperation, and a harmonious social life. The Sinau Bareng Catur program demonstrates that the implementation of UNTAG Surabaya’s Community Pillars extends beyond ceremonial activities to programs that directly address community needs. Through collaboration between students and residents, this activity delivered both educational and social benefits for the community. Going forward, similar activities can be developed further as part of efforts to build an intelligent, active community with a strong sense of togetherness.
