Embracing the Journey of “Figuring It Out”

In our professional sphere, the world of Online Business Managers, there’s a prevailing notion that one must know everything about everything before venturing forth to provide value to clients, or even attempt to look for clients. It’s a paradigm that often fosters hesitancy, and perpetuates a cycle of self-doubt. The underlying assumption is straightforward: without complete knowledge, without ones ducks all being in a row, one is ill-prepared to engage effectively.

This mindset is inherently limiting. Rather than embracing challenges and seizing opportunities, people often get stuck in a never-ending cycle of getting ready, and ‘I must get this sorted first, and I must have that complete next…’ and never actually getting started, missing out on valuable chances to make a meaningful impact, and allowing Imposter Syndrome to keep them fixed tight to one spot.

Yet, the truth is that clients aren’t necessarily seeking someone who knows everything about everything in their service providers. Instead, they value authenticity, accountability, and a demonstrated commitment to excellence. They want collaborators who are honest about what they know and are ready to fill in the blanks when needed.

At its core, it’s about recognising the distinction between two contrasting perspectives:

“I lack full and complete knowledge, therefore I’m not fit for the role.”

VS

“I may not possess all the answers, but I am resolute in my determination to navigate challenges as they emerge.”

Adopting the latter mindset entails a readiness to embrace ambiguity with curiosity and confidence. It necessitates a willingness to leverage one’s existing knowledge while remaining open to continuous learning and adaptation.

Of course, authenticity remains paramount. Falsely claiming expertise where none exists undermines trust and credibility. Instead, transparency is key — acknowledging areas of expertise while affirming a steadfast commitment to addressing knowledge gaps and delivering exceptional results.

Reflecting on past experiences can offer valuable insights into the efficacy of this approach. Consider instances where uncertainty loomed large, yet you persisted and ultimately found solutions.

Perhaps in times gone by you worked in an office or some other employed role.
