How to See Your Hidden Medium Notifications

Accessing your referred members, email subscribers, notes, replies and submissions via the mobile app

Have you ever noticed missing notifications on Medium? Do some of your alerts seem not to go through?

Depending on how we’re accessing the app, it may be that not every notification gets delivered. It turns out, Medium doesn’t notify us of email subscribers, referred members, when someone submits to our publication, or when a piece of ours has been published if we’re using the mobile version of the app.

Why Medium reserves this knowledge only for the users on computers, I’m not sure. But I’ve found a fairly simple bypass.

The first thing you’ll need to do is click the “view stats” button on the top left of your profile.

Next, you’ll need to click on “audience stats” on the top right of the page.

Then click on the notification bell of the new Medium page that opens for you. Notice that, like the last page before it, you’re now directed to a link within your browser, separate from the app itself. This process should work the same on both IOS and android devices.

Now you should notice you’ll have access to all of the notifications that have remained inexplicably hidden.

This method may not work for those users who haven’t yet been granted the expanded stat summaries that come with admission to the Medium Partner Program.

For those users outside of the MPP, they can sign into their account within their browser, rather than the app itself, to access these hidden notifications. For those within the MPP, though, it doesn’t require signing in on a separate browser.

Why Medium would put this barrier in place to begin with, I’m not sure. That they would intentionally grant this comprehensive list of notifications to only the mobile users — of the far less functional Safari, Google Chrome or Duck Duck Go versions of the app — seems unlikely. Regardless of the reason here, what’s clear is that Medium lags far behind its social media competitors in its ability to meaningfully address the issues that its users raise.

The majority of the bugs and oddities that I encountered when I first joined have remained largely intact over an entire year later. Even those issues which I’ve personally spoken with the staff about have endured through the bafflingly large amount of ineffectual updates that Medium pushes on its mobile users.

Is it really possible that Medium updated its IOS app six times within the last month while still failing to even calculate member read times without such glaring glitches and inconsistencies? Hopefully within the coming months and years, we can finally see some of these issues addressed.
