THE HUMAN COST OF ROUGH JUSTICE
A DAUGHTER SILENCED, A MOTHER FORGOTTEN
Maria survived a catastrophic stroke, but she did not survive the system that claimed to protect her.
Left paralysed, speechless, and entirely dependent on others, Maria spent the final years of her life trapped between institutional power and legal process. Though she could no longer speak, she could still feel fear, loneliness, distress, and love. What she needed most was compassion, dignity, and the comfort of her daughter — the one constant protector in her life.
Instead, they were separated.
Under the authority of “Best Interests” proceedings, Maria’s daughter was falsely accused, demonised, and treated as a danger to the mother she was desperately trying to defend. Allegations were never proven, yet harsh contact restrictions remained in place for more than two and a half years.
The punishment was not only imposed on the daughter.
It was inflicted on Maria herself.
An elderly, vulnerable woman was denied the emotional security of the person she trusted most. Professionals spoke the language of safeguarding, yet showed little understanding of the human suffering caused by isolation, fear, and enforced separation.
Procedure replaced compassion.
Control replaced humanity.
Maria cried while her daughter stood outside doors and corridors, legally prevented from comforting her. The woman who had once carried and protected her child was left unable to receive even the simple dignity of a daughter’s touch.
In the final weeks of Maria’s life, the cruelty deepened. Her daughter was reportedly forbidden from accompanying her to hospital. Later, while Maria lay dying, court restrictions prevented meaningful access to her bedside.
She could not hold her mother’s hand.
She could not whisper goodbye.
She could only listen to the suffering from outside the room.
Maria died in September 2007.
With her death, the proceedings ended. No accountability restored the lost years. No judgment could undo the emotional devastation inflicted on both mother and daughter.
This is the true meaning of rough justice:
Not only the failure of law, but the failure of compassion, empathy, and basic human values.
A daughter silenced.
A mother forgotten.
