Suma Narayan, editor-in-chief for HHH, recently asked this question. “What’s the best story you wrote on Medium, in terms of money or personal satisfaction?”
Frankly, I had to think about this.
The truth is, we writers often enjoy personal satisfaction in writing things that are dear to our hearts. If they’re received well, our confidence rises.
But we often find other stories don’t resonate with our readers, so we go back to the drawing board, maybe change tack, or send the ‘no thanks’ to the keeper.
Of course, Medium is not all about being a writer. We must also be a reader. If we don’t reciprocate, what would our purpose be on Medium?
After much deliberation, I’ve chosen two stories from my list.
They’re very different. One is about disappointment in human behaviour, while the other is about environmental behaviour and how we have short-changed Nature to suit our ever-increasing needs and wants.
Each of these stories did well (ish) in terms of readership. As for the money they made, I haven't checked.
The first story below is about my first and last garage sale, which resulted in a large loss of faith in some people, thankfully not all.
Had I included EVERYTHING that happened that day, for instance, someone taking away a box of expensive books that were clearly individually priced, and coming back for more to onsell at the Sunday markets.
My daughter’s boyfriend at the time charged him $15 for all of them.
He went away empty-handed on his next trip.
The rest of our books went to Lifeline, a book charity. That felt so much better.
But in the story, I wanted to highlight that in the whole scheme of things that happened that day in this microcosm of my world, good people existed and will continue to do so.
One kind act that day restored my faith in human nature.
But this one I wrote because I truly am concerned about the way our planet is being desecrated for, let’s be honest, pure and utter greed.
It deliberately touches on rewilding. Now I accept we can't all totally do this, but imagine if we all did something to save our species.
It wouldn’t be long before collectively, humans and Nature would feel the change.
I’m hoping that we writers will keep writing even on those days when inspiration seems far away. We may not be as prolific as others in the world, but we all have worthy perspectives on issues and loves that may be unique and praiseworthy.
Your little pearls of wisdom shared might be the inspiration someone else was looking for.
