On 20 May 2026, CERFAM, in collaboration with the HealthyDiets4Africa (HD4A) project consortium, convened the sixth webinar in the series “A Healthier Future for Africa — A Food Systems Approach to Combatting Malnutrition.” Held under the theme “From Ideas to Action: Building Youth Capacity through Living Labs and Innovation Hubs,” the webinar explored how innovation platforms can empower youth to drive sustainable and inclusive food systems transformation across Africa. Moderated by Dr. Marc Nene, Director of CERFAM, the webinar brought together experts from UNICEF Kenya, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the University of Dschang (Cameroon), and the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). Discussions highlighted the need to move beyond training and build ecosystems that enable youth to innovate, experiment, and access markets. Dr. Charles Otine, Innovation Manager at UNICEF Kenya presented the Engaging Kenyan Youth in Agriculture and Nutrition (EKYAN) programme, which connects youth, schools, farmers, and markets through digital tools and hands-on learning. Dr. Carline Santos, Specialist in Plant Genetic Resources and Crop Protection at IITA presented the Living Lab in Cotonou (Benin), as an experimental and entrepreneurial space combining research, training, and incubation to support youth- and women-led agribusiness innovations. Mr. David Adama, Senior Specialist at AGRA introduced the Africa Agribusiness Youth Strategy (AAYS) and the Youth in Agrifood Systems Performance Index (YAPI) as complementary tools to guide policy and investment. Prof. Herve Mube, Researcher and Senior Lecturer at the University of Dschang underscored the role of territorial Living Labs in enabling co-creation and real-world innovation. The webinar reaffirmed that Living Labs and innovation hubs are key catalysts for translating youth ideas into scalable solutions. A full report highlighting key insights and recommendations will follow soon.
