remio vs Manus vs GenSpark vs Gamma: a head-to-head on PowerPoint editability after export

You’ve probably had this experience.

You ask an AI tool to generate a deck. It looks pretty decent. You export it as a .pptx and open it in PowerPoint to read through it — and you start making small edits along the way. You don’t love the chart palette on slide 3, so you change it. The number on slide 5 is out of date, so you update it. You standardize the font sizes to match your company template.

Five minutes of polish. Stuff you’d never want to delegate to an AI in the first place.

Now you want the AI to do something bigger: turn the last two slides into a timeline layout.

You go back to the AI tool, and the version it’s looking at is the one you exported five minutes ago. Everything you just polished in PowerPoint — the palette, the updated number, the font alignment — is invisible to it.

So you upload the edited .pptx back. The AI spends a minute re-parsing the whole file. It redoes the last two slides. You download the new version, open it in PowerPoint, and the font sizes you carefully aligned have been “normalized” back to whatever the AI thinks they should be.

Three or four rounds of this, and you can’t remember which version is the latest, which edits were yours, which were the AI’s. You give up and finish the rest by hand.

A lot of people have lived through some version of this. And it isn’t one company’s bug. It’s a blind spot for the entire category.

Why we still can’t get rid of PowerPoint

There’s a question worth answering first. If AI can generate decks, why not just let AI do everything?

Because it can’t. The reasons are concrete.

First, not every edit is worth handing to an AI. Update this number to the latest figure. Nudge the logo two centimeters left. Standardize the font size to match the company template. Add a citation. These take you five seconds by hand. Explaining them to an AI takes longer than doing them, and the AI may introduce new mistakes along the way.

Second, your deck isn’t for you alone. Colleagues, clients, executives — they all live in PowerPoint. Your company has brand fonts, compliance templates, watermarks. That whole stack lives inside the PowerPoint ecosystem, not in some AI tool’s web editor.

Third, real workflow is a relay, not a handoff. The AI generates a draft. You polish it in PowerPoint. The AI restyles a few slides. You polish again. For any deck that actually matters, this back-and-forth happens five to ten times.

The last mile of polish needs a “see the whole picture, change one thing, see the result instantly” feedback loop. PowerPoint has been refining this loop for thirty years. AI isn’t going to replace it any time soon.

So the question isn’t whether to keep PowerPoint. The question is how AI and PowerPoint are supposed to work together.

Testing four products

I gave the same task to four AI PPT products — Gamma, Manus, GenSpark, and our own product, remio — and looked at one specific thing: how editable is the deck after you export it.

Gamma. Gamma’s editor is web-native — HTML and CSS under the hood, very high design freedom, gorgeous card-style layouts. The cost shows up at export. Complex layouts get rasterized into a single image per slide — you can’t click into a text box, because there isn’t one. The user community even coined a term for this: “flat image masquerading as a slide.” Gamma’s help center confirms that fonts aren’t embedded and gradients may render differently, but doesn’t spell out that complex layouts collapse into images. One user who tried Gamma for 60 days wrote on Reddit: “After deck #3, I stopped promising editable .pptx files as a deliverable.”

Manus. Manus’s docs say: “PowerPoint (.pptx): Fully editable in PowerPoint or Google Slides.” Third-party reviews are more careful — “good for light edits but the layer structure can be messy for deeper redesigns.” A user on r/ManusOfficial described their actual workflow: “Manus edits → review in PDF (because the ppt is too messy) → only download pptx at the very end → then take it to Claude to write the speaker notes.” The detour says it all.

GenSpark. GenSpark is the most honest of the three. Its FAQ says, in so many words: “complex HTML tables and charts are converted to images or shapes during export, meaning they may not be editable as native data objects in PowerPoint.” So text usually survives, but tables and charts get rasterized. Third-party tests confirm that GenSpark’s layer ordering and slide dimensions are commonly off; the working consensus among users is “budget 10–15 minutes of manual cleanup after every export.”

Each one fails in its own way. Gamma fails structurally but consistently (web architecture). Manus has element overflow and blank slides. GenSpark has layer-order and dimension issues. But none of this is the real problem.

remio. remio takes a different architectural choice. The decks it generates aren’t files you “export” — they’re native .pptx documents from the start. Clicking “open in PowerPoint” launches the real .pptx in PowerPoint, with no intermediate format. Every shape, text box, and icon is a native PowerPoint object — nothing is rasterized. The bigger difference shows up in the next step: edits you make in PowerPoint sync back to remio the moment you save, so the AI is always looking at the version you’re currently working on. There’s no upload, no re-parse, no “wait while I read the file again.” I’ll come back to why that matters in a minute.

The real problem starts after export

Gamma, Manus, and GenSpark all let you upload the edited .pptx back so the AI can continue working on it. That capability exists.

But picture the full loop:

  1. Generate the deck inside the AI tool.
  2. Click “export to .pptx.” Wait 30–60 seconds.
  3. Download the file. Open it in PowerPoint. Make your edits.
  4. Save. Go back to the AI tool. Click “upload.”
  5. Wait for the AI to re-parse the whole file before it can do anything.
  6. AI makes its changes. Click “export to .pptx” again. Wait 30–60 seconds.
  7. Download. Open in PowerPoint. Edit again.

For any deck that matters, five to ten rounds of this is normal. That’s 20–40 file handoffs between the AI tool and PowerPoint, each one with an export and a re-parse.

The problem isn’t that the AI isn’t smart enough. The problem is that the human and the AI don’t share a working surface. The AI sees one document in its editor. You see another one in PowerPoint. The only way they stay in sync is you, manually shuttling files between them.

Here’s the right analogy: this is what document collaboration looked like before Google Docs. Teams emailing .docx files back and forth. “This version is my edits.” “That version includes the changes you sent yesterday.” “Can someone please figure out which is the latest?” Three of the four products I tested are still operating at that level.

The user community is starting to smell this, even if they haven’t articulated it yet. People on Reddit complain that “AI agent–style PPT tools are good one day and broken the next.” What’s actually happening is that they’re uploading revised files round after round, and the AI re-establishes context from scratch each time. Drift is inevitable. And because Manus and GenSpark both charge by credit, bad editability triggers more regeneration, more regeneration burns more credits. The whole experience becomes a war of attrition against your wallet and your patience.

Why the remio approach matters

The point of all this — native .pptx from the start, real-time sync from PowerPoint — isn’t speed. The export step in the other three tools usually takes under a minute. The point is to remove the conveyor belt entirely.

When the AI and PowerPoint share the same file, you stop having to track “which version is the latest.” You stop having to re-upload after every polish round. You stop watching the AI re-parse a file it should have already been looking at.

It’s not AI replacing PowerPoint. It’s AI and PowerPoint taking turns on the same document. From a workflow standpoint, this is what AI PPT products were always supposed to look like.

One last thought

What I think presentation work is going to look like in the next few years:

Ninety percent of the time, people and AI will be taking turns on a shared working surface — which is going to be PowerPoint, for the foreseeable future. The AI handles structural moves: zero-to-one, “restyle this slide,” “unify the palette.” The human handles the polish: “update this number to the latest figure,” “match the company template,” “the boss wants this logo here.”

If either side tries to own the entire deck, half the workflow breaks.

In document collaboration, the product that gets this right won’t necessarily be the one with the smartest model. It’ll be the one that builds on the assumption that the AI and the native app are two views of the same document, not two stops on a manual conveyor belt.
