The Mysterious Legend of the Man Who Lived 800 Years Ago
In my town, my grandmother always told a legend that had been passed down through generations. It was about a man who lived 800 years ago in a bunker hidden deep within a wild forest. He lived there completely alone.

But he had not always been a hermit. Quite the opposite – he had once lived in a lively city where he met new people every day. He spent his life outdoors, constantly seeking new adventures. Something, however, gradually transformed his life. His decision to isolate himself in that bunker did not happen overnight, although it was triggered by a single event that changed everything.
It would be difficult to describe him as either a good man or a bad one. He could easily find himself in conflicts with others, though more because of his naïveté than because of malice.
After the event that changed his life, he spent years searching for an answer to one question: Why? Why had it happened? That question remains unanswered even today. Despite all our technological progress and the brilliance of the greatest minds, no one has been able to explain it. Some mysteries belong only to God, and perhaps that was why he never found the answer.
Over the years, countless “whys” accumulated. They arose from different circumstances, but they all pointed back to that single life-changing event. His questions were not driven by curiosity alone – they were filled with pain, and pain rarely exists without a reason.
So what was the event that changed his life forever?
Years earlier, the man had unwillingly become part of a strange game.
The entire game revolved around a bustling marketplace where people bought and sold food and other goods. His role was simple: he would walk through the market while others observed and interacted with him.
At first, he assumed it would be harmless.
But the greatest twist had not yet been revealed.
Anyone who mistreated him would be punished.
The man strongly opposed this rule. He believed it was perfectly normal that not everyone would treat him kindly. Some people are kind, others are not – that is simply part of life. He wanted no one to suffer because of the way they treated him.
Yet his opinion did not matter.
He was forced to participate in the game against his will.
Even so, he convinced himself that everything would soon be over. It was only a brief event, he thought.
Instead, everything went terribly wrong.
Someone falsely accused him of things he had never done. Some people defended him, while others spread lies. The situation shocked him. At worst, he had expected someone to overcharge him for tomatoes in the marketplace – not for his life to be turned into a public scandal.
Eventually, he calmed himself and believed that once he left the marketplace, everything would return to normal.
It never did.
Wherever he went, the same mysterious pattern continued. People kept being punished whenever they mistreated him.
As this unfolded, he desperately tried to prove that he was no different from anyone else – that no one deserved punishment because of how they treated him.
Nothing changed.
The events of that day in the marketplace never truly ended. They did not last for a day, a week, or a month. They followed him for the rest of his life.
And throughout it all, one question haunted him:
Why me?
Why not someone else?
What was so important about him that even he could not recognize? And why could no one else recognize it either?
Exhausted, he chose to disappear.
He retreated into a bunker deep within the forest, where no one could find him or come into contact with him. He believed this was the only way to prevent more people from being punished.
Life had become unbearable.
He wanted it all to end.
Yet even death felt like another punishment for humanity, because, in his mind, it was humanity itself that had driven him to that point.
One day, two bandits discovered the bunker.
There was nothing of monetary value inside, yet they decided to enter anyway.
The man awoke.
He offered no resistance.
When the bandits decided to kill him, he fell to his knees and begged for mercy through tears.
What happened next remains a mystery.
For centuries, countless people have questioned the ending of this legend, yet no one has ever been able to make sense of what truly happened inside that lonely bunker hidden in the forest.
