Recent E. coli monitoring shows significant differences in water quality across Chicago’s beaches. The data reveals patterns that swimmers and city officials should note.

The Chicago Park District has implemented a comprehensive system to monitor environmental conditions along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

31st Street Beach stood out with multiple high readings, including 329 CFU on June 9, 40% above the safety limit. Nearby, Foster Beach and 12th Street Beach also recorded several elevated measurements during this period.

Water conditions changed rapidly at some locations. Rogers Beach saw bacteria levels jump from 28 to 153 CFU between June 7 and 9. Osterman Beach showed similar fluctuations, with concentrations increasing threefold in the same timeframe. These changes often occur after rainfall events.

Several beaches maintained consistently safe conditions. Jarvis Beach recorded the lowest readings all week, never exceeding 90 CFU. Leone and Hartigan beaches also showed stable, acceptable levels throughout the monitoring period.

The variation between beaches suggests that local factors and disparities significantly impact water quality. Areas with repeated high readings may need targeted solutions like improved drainage or pollution controls. Locations showing sudden increases could benefit from more frequent testing after storms.

This monitoring data helps identify which beaches consistently meet safety standards and which require additional attention. The DNA-based testing method provides more timely results than traditional culture tests, allowing for faster public notifications when needed.
