Dear Journal …
So a holiday invite walked into my week. And with it, a whole little situation I didn’t ask for but apparently needed to sort through.
He wants us to go. His friends are going. One of them just had a baby and needs a breather — which, fair, I respect that entirely. New mother energy is sacred, and I’m not about to bulldoze into that. But one of the days clashes with something I already committed to. So I said I’d come a day later. Simple. Sorted. Moving on.
Except it wasn’t moving on.
Turns out his friends want him to travel with them. Just them. And someone in that group actually had the nerve to taunt him — what, your girl can’t travel alone?
I laughed. I actually laughed. Because I have packed a bag, boarded a flight, and written entire continents into words — alone — before most people have figured out their weekend plans. Solo travel isn’t something I do. It’s something I am; my entire 20s. It has its own body of work, its own passport stamps, its own published pages. So the question was almost endearing in how little it knew.

But here’s where I landed after sitting with it quietly.
I don’t want to walk into a group that wasn’t quite set up for me. Not because I can’t handle it — I can handle a room full of strangers with my eyes closed and a carry-on in one hand. But because I have standards for how I enter spaces. I’d rather arrive whole into something ready for me. I don’t do late entrances into rooms that didn’t save me a seat.
There’s also something I’m clocking but choosing not to say out loud right now — if she doesn’t quite see us as a unit, that says something. Either she hasn’t been told clearly enough, or the picture just hasn’t been painted. I’m tucking that thought away for a quiet conversation on a different evening. Not today.
Today, I made a different decision.
They go. They get their time. She gets her people around her, her comfort, her laughter without a new face disrupting the frequency. That’s actually beautiful, and I mean that.
And me? I’m going to invite her over. One afternoon. My home, real conversation, no performance, no group dynamic to navigate.
That’s the introduction I want. Intentional. Warm. On my terms.
I don’t chase rooms that haven’t made space for me. I create better ones.
And if anyone wonders whether I’ll be okay travelling alone — there’s a bookshelf with my name on it that already answered that.
