Light sat alone in his room, eyes locked on a page of dense text, though his mind was elsewhere. The air was still, thick with the hidden presence of the Death Note—tucked away in the drawer like a loaded weapon. Its weight pressed on the room, invisible but unmistakable. Ryuk lingered somewhere in the shadows, amused as always.

Light tried to ignore the Shinigami’s cryptic comments, but a sudden knock at the door cut through his concentration.

His sister’s voice followed.

“Light… someone’s at the door. They’re asking for you.”

He paused, gaze sharpening.

Who the hell could it be? he wondered. Is it someone from the task force? Did they find something… about L?

He stood, composed himself, and made his way to the front door.

Standing there was a man Light didn’t recognize—tall, well-dressed, and strangely serene. His brown hair was neatly kept, his expression polite, unassuming. At first glance, he looked harmless. If anything, there was a softness to him. A kind of disarming calm. Definitely not police. No detective would carry that kind of innocence in their eyes.

Then the man spoke, voice smooth, almost too pleasant.

“Hello, sir. It’s nice to meet you. I’m Johan Liebert.”
