Death Note episode 19

Let’s talk about episode 19 of Death Note. It’ll make more sense if you read my other analysis first, and there will be spoilers. With that out of the way, I want to talk about when Light was wondering what he would do if he had Kira’s powers. There are a lot of moments where Light wonders if he could be Kira. But this is one of those moments where L notices. L reaches out, saying that Light was staring into space, and he wanted to know what Light was thinking about. L made it a joke about sweets, but we all know he’s too smart not to have noticed Light was deep in thought. And I believe that it would’ve paid off if Light had told him what he was thinking. It would’ve made L more positive that Light had lost his memory and be less suspicious of him. I know Light wouldn’t have done that because he wouldn’t remember enough to think that was a good idea, but it’s a fun thought to wonder what would’ve happened if he did. Next, I want to talk about L’s phone call with Matsuda. Matsuda caught most of the hints in that call for what to do, but I think there’s one he missed. At the end of the call, L says, “Guess I’ll drag you out some other time.” That was his way of saying ‘don’t worry, I’ll drag you out of this mess.’ I also want to bring up when L grabs onto Light’s shirt and tells him they’re going to need Misa’s help to save Matsuda. I ship L and Light, so this is one of my favorite moments. L knows this will be dangerous, and it will be hard to get Matsuda out of this situation alive. L doesn’t want another person to ‘die by his hand’ as he sees it. He believes 14 people already died because of him. (the 12 FBI agents, Lind.L.Taylor, and Ukita) Out of habit, and in a moment of panic, he reaches out to the one he believes to be his only friend. He grabs onto Light shirt because he wants someone to depend on. Despite that, L still says the wrong thing of Light in this moment. He asks if Misa would do whatever he asked to help. They did need her help, but Light had already said that his ideals wouldn’t allow him to use a woman’s feelings like that. Although when it’s a matter of life and death for Matsuda, the ideals and morals can be fed to the fishes for all he cares. Next, I wanted to talk about Misa’s reaction to Matsuda’s fake death. She was controlled and calm despite the situation. Meaning, L preplanned how to save Matsuda and told Misa about it. That’s why she set up the meet with a bunch of distracting girls and on a high floor with a balcony. I do believe Matsuda made a mistake, but I don’t think it’s fair for L to call him an idiot; he brought their suspect pool from 300,000 people down to only 8. It was a risk, but it helped them succeed. Also, when Higuchi threatens Hatori, saying he thinks he will be killed by Kira next, Hatori is more worried about that than he was about going to jail a second ago. To him, death is worse than jail. Which I can understand, although I’ve heard many people think the other way. Lastly, the interpretation of ‘Eraldo Coil’ that L had Aiber do makes me wonder if L has always played Coil as a money-hungry, intelligent guy. It would make sense that if he made three different detectives of himself to deceive people, he would’ve have given them all separate and unique personas with L being the original. Coil was made to be very smart and to use that to the extent of money. And listening to Higuchi, it seems he’s not the only money and power-hungry man in these episodes. Perhaps that was Coil’s original persona, or perhaps L made it that way to connect with Kira’s persona and catch him. But anyway, that’s all I’ve got for this episode.
