For years, I assumed dinner parties were easier for people with larger homes.

In a small apartment, too much furniture can make the space feel crowded long before any guests arrive. I’ve found that removing a few unnecessary items before hosting often makes a room feel noticeably larger. A little empty space gives people room to move around naturally, which immediately changes how the apartment feels.

The atmosphere matters just as much as the layout. Bright overhead lighting might be practical during the day, but it rarely creates the kind of environment people want for a relaxed evening with friends. Softer lighting from lamps, wall lights, or candles tends to make a space feel warmer and more inviting. Guests may not consciously notice it, but good lighting has a remarkable effect on how comfortable a room feels.

Food can have a similar impact. Whenever I’ve tried cooking complicated meals while hosting, I’ve spent half the evening rushing between the kitchen and dining table. These days, I keep the menu simple and prepare as much as possible in advance. That way, I can spend more time enjoying the company instead of worrying about what’s happening in the oven.

That approach becomes even more important in a smaller home, where the kitchen naturally becomes part of the social space. I’ve noticed that guests almost always end up gathering there, chatting while drinks are poured or helping themselves to snacks. Keeping the kitchen organised and easy to move around makes entertaining feel far more relaxed, even when space is limited.

What surprised me most, though, is that guests rarely care about the things hosts tend to worry about. They’re not measuring the size of the room or judging whether you have enough square footage. Most people simply want to feel comfortable.
