We are at a turning point. We must evolve our thinking from what is merely usable or engaging to what is truly kind and empowering. This is a commitment to honoring human well-being as a primary success metric.

Let’s be the architects of a more conscious digital future. Intentionally. Compassionately!

For millennia, our evolution has been intertwined with our tools. From the first stone axe that extended our reach, to the printing press that extended our voice, we have always sought to overcome our limitations. Today, we are building the most powerful tools in history. The convergence of AI, Cloud, and IoT gives us an almost god-like ability to perceive, process, and act upon the world.

We see this power in the research being presented right now. Look at the work of Yuming Jiang and his colleagues, who are using computer vision to augment the life-saving skills of pathologists by developing deep learning models that can predict patient prognosis and therapeutic benefits from digital pathology images (Zhang et al., 2024). Or the research of Syu-Siang Wang’s team, which uses distributed microphones and deep learning to enhance the most fundamental human tool: our voice (Wang et al., 2019). This is the promise of technology: a direct extension of our intent to heal, to connect, and to understand.

3.3 million years ago

Evidence from a site called Lomekwi 3 in Kenya revealed stone tools dating back to this time, predating the Homo genus (to which humans belong) by about a million years.

6000 years ago

The earliest evidence of the wheel dates back to around 3500 BCE (Before Common Era) in Mesopotamia, which is modern-day Iraq. Potter’s Wheel First: These early wheels were likely used as potter’s tools to shape clay, not for transportation. Transportation Later: It took another 300 years or so for the wheel to be adapted for vehicles used in transportation.

2500 years ago

The Antikythera Mechanism is generally dated to the late 2nd century BCE or early 1st century BCE, with estimates ranging from around 205 BCE to 60 BCE. This complex device is considered the world’s first known analog computer, capable of predicting astronomical positions, eclipses, and even the cycles of ancient athletic games. Its advanced engineering and astronomical knowledge highlight the sophisticated scientific understanding of the ancient Greeks.

This is not a history lesson, so let’s speed it up:

200 years ago … age of mechanical computing

Difference Engine: Babbage conceived of the Difference Engine in the early 1820s (around 1822).

70 years ago … The Theoretical Foundations for AI

Contrary to popular understanding of the general use of AI, the science is much older and mature.

1950: Alan Turing’s “Computing Machinery and Intelligence” 1951: Christopher Strachey’s checkers program 1952: Arthur Samuel’s checkers-playing program 1956: The Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence and so on ….

15 years ago … The AI starts to become affordable

2009 (ish): It is hard to say who inspired who and who descovered who’s potential, we can atleast celebrate that the advancement in GPU might be popularised by the gaming industry and making it affordable (++CUDA, I acknowledge you too!).

Sometime around 2009, scientists started using GPUs for large neural networks and the world was different.

The unsung heros of AI I think are the nerds who wanted to make amazing games, pushing the technology and the players who spent $$$, boosting the computing economy to super-computer level.

Last 10 years … The AI is everywhere.

2015–2025:

I think the image below summarises my point. And, Yes! it is incorrect but it is just a tool for me to explain what I am talking about.

What I really want to emphasize here is that the evolution of technology is way, way faster than our own evolution. Some philosphers might argue that AI is actually part of our evolution. Is it by design, or is it by ego? Ego to prove that we can do more, push the limits. The question we should ask is why humans have such a need to push the limts? Now, that’s by design.

The rate of technological advancement is infinitely larger that human evolution. If I may oversimplify, over the last 100,000 years or so, humans have “biologically”, mostly stayed the same but the rate at which we make tools is exponential.

Question: Where does this knowledge to make comes from? Answer: It’s our conscious, its our interconnectedness and it’s our reach.

We are not there yet, and so we make!

Hence this is very important for us understand the root need for making tools, think inwards, and bounce outwards.

I propose that we start looking inwards, the whitin, to find the the best balance between how technology in AI is shifting economy and what is sustainable.

I propose a pradigm shift towads conscious design.

Conscious Design in UX can be defined as “designing with a degree of enlightened thought or observation,” where designers consider the ethical, social, and moral impacts of their creations to offer more sustainable and responsible solutions.
